What is the purpose of socializing?

As a goal oriented individual, someone please explain the purpose of socializing? Is socializing just a mindless activity, meeting others for no reason or purpose? Do you actively search for people to help you achieve your goals?

People who hang with others live longer. Might not be a benefit if the conversation is lame as shit-on-a-rope.

I'm mostly a hermit, but I do make sure I get out to visit with acquaintances. I love my solitude, but I also like socialization in moderation. It's good to keep my head in the right place and to make and keep up connections with folks.

I do have a goal of finishing a book I'm writing, and I do keep an eye out for someone locally with whom I could share some ideas and maybe who might want to read my manuscript and give me some feedback. So, yeah that is a little in the back of my mind.

Hermit::: what is the female form of this word?

@Jacar, I don't know, Hermitess? Doesn't matter male or female, when enjoying the quiet privacy of my home, I might as well be invisible. I do make sure I'm visible when going out though!

@Julie808 I live in the city. Very noisy.I have the TVs on mostly to make it actually quiet. The TV dogs are not the real dogs next door.

And "Hermitess" is good. Be proud.

At times it's more important to know who to talk to than knowing the answer. How can you know who to talk to if you don't socialize?

Look to meet people for intelligent conversation and socialization. Similar political and social views.

I have long thought that the two things that humanity does best is sex and killing each other.

The irony of which is not lost on me - creation and destruction.

Personally, I find people endlessly fascinating. I don't know if it helps me meet goals, but I really do like socialising, hearing their stories. But that's just me.

It all comes down to basic human needs.
Humans need a sense of belonging and to be accepted by peers, a sense of collective identity. Within society an individual needs to be treated and to see himself as a means to an end and also as an end in his own right.

Just as individuals satisfy needs of society, society must satisfy the needs of the individual. It is when the norms and institutions cease to satisfy the individuals identity needs that he feels alienated and is convinced that the institutions are imposed on him.

Humans also need a sense of individual self. One has to know and accept who one is. The individual's identity consists of the totality of his biological and affective needs, his personality traits and personal interests, his experiences, values, beliefs and goals and his relationships with others.

Collective and individual identity are equally important. Just as lack of collective identity results in alienation, if the personal level of identity were all that mattered, egoism would take precedence over all else leading to both the breaking of mutual faith and the inability to undertake collective tasks.

I socialize to find common interests, common ground, new perspectives, to have entertaining banter & the joy of someone else's laughter. I socialize because, even as an introvert and somewhat private person, I care about other people and enjoy their company

@AmiSue I sort of agree...for me it's less that I'm bored of my story and more that I want someone to tell the story with - a co-author?

Well, we socialize because it is healthy for us to do so; we are social animals, without socializing with others our mental state may begin to decline which causes things like insanity. Or so ive learned.
