Will Trump win in 2020?

Has anyone changed their mind about Bernie Sanders, and the America he wants to see in the future, since the last election?

I received many great answers to my last question asking if Americans view Canada as a socialist country.

Many Canadians are just as informed about American politics as we are our own - in some cases, due to vast, sometimes disturbing changes (within the current administration in particular), even more so. Our discussions about Trump are no doubt as frequent as your own, with major concerns about the current state and future of the US, and the impact it will have on the world.

I am a huge fan of Bernie Sanders, who I believe is a solid, honest man with great integrity, regardless of whether one agrees with his ideas. Many of us here would love to see him win 2020, but I understand there is still this fear of socialism, which is not to be confused with social democracy, where social programs are in place to protect all of its citizens - not just the very wealthy few.

My gut told me Trump would become president, from the moment I heard his first speech (much to my chagrin). Now, I can't imagine a second term for Trump - my gut tells me no, which I understand is not based in any reality of the possible outcome. What are your thoughts on this now? Will Trump be reelected? Could Bernie win? All the signs of him running again are there.

Weren't his odds last time 3 in 10? I think that's about right at this point. I don't know what to think of the polls, but Rasmussen has been uniformly positive for Trump...and now, slowly, their polls are turning against Trump also. I think they had one last month that had Sanders beating Trump by one point. And that's not to mention all the Fox News polls that mostly show Trump losing to any Democrat. (And all the other polls--sometimes accused of leaning Democratic--also show Trump mostly losing to just about everyone.)

I can't remember where I read it (probably one of the Michael Wolff books), but Steve Bannon also seems to think Trump can't win reelection.

2020 is Trump's to win or lose. People will mostly be voting FOR or AGAINST him, not FOR anyone else. I think "chaos fatigue" will play a bigger factor than any positive aspects of any challenger.

I wrote this a couple months ago on why my pet rock would be a better president:

My Pet Rock never lies to people. Ever.
My Pet Rock will never break it's promises because it doesn't make any.
My Pet Rock never had a bad word to say about anybody.
It doesn't make up silly new words.
It doesn't have bone spurs.
My Pet Rock isn't under investigation by the FBI.
My Pet Rock doesn't put it's job off to play golf.
My Pet Rock will never shut down the government.
My Pet Rock won't use it's position as president for personal financial gain.
Anyone who tries to collude with My Pet Rock will quickly find it has nothing to say to them.
My Pet Rock never went to college but it never failed a test either.
My Pet Rock is not racist.
My Pet Rock would be tough on terrorists, especially when stoning them.

Most likely he will. There are no better candidates so far and he is an encumbant. Despite all the desperate cries of the sky is falling no such thing is happening. We are doing much better in all areas than we have in a long time.

Trump won because he did not play by the normal book. Also the rigging of the college. He left his gop rivils in the ground. I am not even sure if sanders could have won. His supporter are part of a cult now. Remember Hillary won the pop vote. Maybe now the voters who decided to stay home will come out

Ok, I know this is an old post, and I'm not sure how I got here, but I had to read it.... That being said, I found your reply here interesting. I have to ask what your feelings are now on the situation.. Most of all, though, I'd like to know what you meant by Trump rigging the college.. What... How could he have done that ,, pray tell?? .🤪

Well Americans voted for George W Bush for a second term ????? Why not Trump? The rich are the ones who will be most affected by socialism which is why they force their propergander down your throat

Hopefully not

Unfortunately yes ...because look how crazy Americans are like the Evangelical Republicans who voted for Trump!

Remember his base is very small. Those crazy end timers the reason i am arming

I hope you realize soon... a shit load of atheist are conservatives that voted for him... It's not that far fetched, if you actually go out and talk to people in the atheist community. Yes, I know most are Liberal, but no where near all... not even close. Keep that in mind, and learn why.. There's a good reason so many of us feel this way.

I honestly can't believe he is still there. I have never been so afraid and disappointed. I don't recognize my own country. I am horrified about what is going on and that no one is stopping it.

Well,,, it's been a year now.. (almost) and you're still here,,, and the country is fine, in fact, doing great.. LONG LIVE TRUMP!! .... LMAO.... 😍

I see two ways Trump can win.

  1. The economy keeps rocking, and he can rig that. NK takes real steps towards disarmament, less likely but plausible. Trump would ride those two Yuge wins almost no matter who the DNC puts up.

  2. Democrats choose another horrific candidate, it's a little scary Hillary and Bernie are so popular. Sanders might have beat him in 2016, but I think that's unlikely for 2020.

It's still early and any prognosticating is about as likely as your average religious prophecy.

2

Of course Trump will win in 2020. The economy’s doing great! Only an idiot would vote for Bernie Sanders. @Gater

@snifflz Your only seeing things through your liberal glasses.

Not sure about you but I am down almost $100k for the year now.

Trump has several things going for him headed into 2020:

  1. Incumbency.
  2. A shockingly large group of people who seem to worship him personally.
  3. Enough conservatives happy enough to put up with his crap because they're getting the Supreme Court picks that they really cared about all along.
  4. A Democratic party that seems hellbent on setting its centrist and progressive factions against one another.
  5. A general public that despite everything does not seem to either care about public affairs or engage in critical thought.
  6. A media that has proven itself susceptible to being bullied by those in power.

So let's not fool ourselves: as unpopular as he is, he could be re-elected!

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez...part of Bernie's campaign wiped out her Democratic opponent. It could be that she really represents her electorate (of the same, predominant culture) or it be that progressives with a socialist agenda are becoming predominant in the Democratic party. THAT would be fantastic!

If that vile man wins again we will suffer for an additional 4 years. Seeing his face is instantaneous puke

1

Considering his historically low approval ratings and the fact he lost the popular vote by a wide margin in 2016, the odds should be stacked against him. However, his ace in the hole is the fact he is running against the Democrats. Right now I do not trust that the Democrats have their act together. Even before the Hillary loss in 2016, they were eviscerated by the Republicans at the Congressional and state level.

2

We know the always angry right will vote, but will the sometimes complacent left and so-called
left leaning and centrist independents vote. If they do, he won't win.

2

IF democrats can take the house in 2018 they can start impeachment proceedings and that will derail what's happening here. If that doesn't happen, Republicans will continue to cater to this sociopath and he will get a 2nd term. Will he make it through the 2nd term? Not likely. YES! LOVE BERNIE!

burnie made possible a trump victory. He divided a party that was not his to divide. Now you don't like the results.

@GipsyOfNewSpain well that's bullshit. That's the argument we always hear when there's competition.

@crazycurlz And that echo will continue until the old geezer dies. Problem is those burnie zombies that shifted to trump will never, ever admit voting for trump. Because we both know... truth hurts. Even a dead zoo gorilla received 16,000 writing-in votes.

@JustLynnie Oh so you are a crack smoker? Okay. Nice meeting you, get help.

Sometimes it really is disappointing to realize how self deluded I was; delighting in the discovery of this site because I found quite a few people focused in reality. Then a post like this draws so many comments demonstrating the opposite.

There is such a long way to go. Purveyors of 'faith' have nothing about which to feel anxious in our times.

I caucused for Sanders and, at the district level, he was the clear favorite, but anyone paying attention could see an undercurrent working against him. When Clinton got the nod, I started looking at the Libertarians. Seemed like Johnson had some good ideas, but wasn't getting any air time. Then he did. WOW, he was bad!! It's shaping up to be another shit show, with the Dems clamoring for the title of biggest Trump hater, while not knowing if they want to go with the appearance of stable tradition or ride the populist Bernie machine and the GOP not knowing if they should distance themselves from Trumps antics or declare him crazy like a fox and fall in with him. I can see the orangutan leveraging the chaos and seizing a 2nd term. He's got a lot of resistance from both sides - that's not the problem. The problem is a lack of cohesion among the resistance.

1

I truly hope not he is the most frightening Bogeyman in hte world for me and he's coming here! Theresa May has invited him despite him separating 6 month old children from their parents and locking them up! If this is not a publicity stunt or even if it is he needs locking away

Democrat not trump again

Trump will win, no matter who runs against him.

I sure hope the hell not! Trump is a disaster! The DNC screwed up big time in 2016. Bernie Sanders should have been the nominee. Hopefully, they learned their lesson going into 2020. I'm much rather have a President Sanders than a President Trump.

Edit: Not to mention that all of the polls had Sanders stomping Trump in the general election!

My own take is that, despite the many and various strands linking the Trump campaign/transition/White House to Russia and its attack on the 2016 election now interconnecting to form an ever-widening web, it will be the Stormy Daniels case, the seizure of Michael Cohen's files and cellphones, the dogged determination of attorney Michael Avennati, and the very bright light these are about to shed on the past and present financial machinations and questionable dealings of the present occupant of the White House that will force The Donald to step down.

It's a minority of Americans who follow the daily news coverage of the evidence being uncovered by the Mueller investigation, besides which, even after November's election, there may not be the required 60% of Senate votes necessary to impeach. However, when the dirty deals with unsavory busness partners that has been the consistent hallmark of Trump's business adventures, and his flagrant defiance of leagl restraint - not least in his use of the Trump Foundation as a personal slush fund and source of campaign funds - see the light of day, all but his most committed followers will see for themselves the nature of the man.
