When a supposed socialist can write things such as "properly control the import [of] the flow of labour" I despair.

Gareth Level 7 June 24, 2018

The EU's 'Freedom of Movement' was solely about undercutting wages. Bosses chose the EU nationals with the lowest exchange rate, so they could pay less.

This is capitalism. This is why the United States decides what kind of person can enter the US and what type can't.

The flow of labour is ugly, but that's what it is. Our governments and the ruling class are in charge.

Hence, children in detention centres.

@Ellatynemouth I have no problem with people from other countries coming here to develop their careers, travel, and learn English. Freedom of movement is a wonderful right for ordinary people and Brexiteers, trade union leaders and racists hate it. I despise Corbyn for not even fighting for this to be basic right.

@Gareth

Shortly after Sweden joined the EU, several businesses began sacking their work force and replacing them with EU nationals. Why?

Because they could pay them the going rate of the EU member state the worker came from - which crucially was lower than the Swedish rate. Business got cheaper labour. Workers suffered.

Now that there's a shortage of cheaper EU labour in the UK, employers are being forced to pay higher wages for UK citizens.

You have to question why most of the ruling class owned media supports the euphemistically named 'Freedom of Movement' legislation in the first place.

Personally, I get angry about workers being exploited.

@Ellatynemouth What is this 'ruling class' you keep talking about? Nigel Farage, businessman and MEP, fits my idea of that far more than I do and yet he's anti free-movement and I'm pro. I don't like the closed shop mentality that forbids people from poor countries coming to wealthy countries to make a decent life for themselves.
If potato-pickers are to get £10 an hour instead of the £7.50 say, an Eastern European might work for that will result in:
1 .Lower profit for the farmer ('ruling class'?)
2. Some potatoes going unpicked and rotting in the ground
3. More expensive potatoes (not good for poorer people)
4. Less opportunity for poor non-nationals to make better money
It seems to me that because you are against (1) you are prepared to sacrifice (2), (3) and (4).

@Gareth

Please do not insult me. I have nothing to do with Nigel Farage.

You think there's no ruling class. Fine.

Shall we end it there?

@Ellatynemouth I asked you what you meant by "ruling class". If you don't want to clarify, that's fine. I don't see any insult in what I posted. If you can find one, that's your right.

@Gareth

I am not going to spoon feed you basic information. You have a mind of your own. You can do your own research about the ruling class.

@Ellatynemouth I had a feeling I would not get a straight answer.

The EU was a horrible idea. No country should ever abdicate its right to ever print its own currency or tie its currency to an external source of value (e.g., the dollar, or gold). This never ends well. Furthermore, the EU is not like a real country that can raise taxes that can set taxes and distribute them to poorer regions. It's doomed to failure.

Thank you.

It was created by the CIA for the sole purpose of making U.S. trade with Europe simpler.

It was totally undemocratic too. We can vote for a new government every five years but there is no option to vote to leave the EU. It was a fluke that such a vote was offered in Britain. The ruling class regret it.

Thank goodness the UK is leaving.

@Ellatynemouth Are you sure it was created by the CIA??? At the time, Pat Robertson said it was a vehicle for the Anti-Christ to rise to power (That prediction did not age well). LOL

@TonyMacaroni

The antichrist thing sounds ridiculous.

The US has long tried to set up trade agreements to make things simpler and more profitable. TTIP and something else comes to mind.

Then there's NATO which the US uses for its own benefit. A small chunk of British politicians are in the pockets of the Whitehouse.

@Ellatynemouth Putting aside whose idea it was, it was an objectively bad economic decision that has created a system that is inherently unstable. Unfortunately, if at and when it falls apart, it will have a severe negative consequences for economies like ours that are closely related.
