LINK For All Life As We Know It: The Case for Humanist Environmentalism - TheHumanist.com

FTA: When it comes to the environment, starting with reason means that once we’re exposed to the evidence of shrinking glaciers, rising surface temperatures, and climbing sea levels, we’re likely to draw the obvious conclusion that climate change is both real and accelerating. It also means accepting what we’ve learned about climate change and our role as humans in making it steadily worse. Knowing that we’re the perpetrators of species extinctions, infertile soils, undrinkable waters, and similar hardships, we are more likely to take responsibility for correcting our course. Not expecting any higher power to save us at the last minute, we’re more likely to accept that now is the time for us to buckle-down and accept some sacrifices in order that generations to come will have a planet to enjoy.

Just another mass extinction to make way for a new dominant species once we’re done. Don’t worry about it. Too late now. Should have fixed it when we were 20 somethings with our great save the whale, ban the bomb, feed the world ideology. But we didn’t. We carried on our own sweet way and have fucked it for our grandchildren. That’s why us empty vessels don’t deserve the respect of today’s youth.

Agreed now we need people making decisions who do not own stocks in the power companies that make for bad air conditions.

If is our planet... it is up to us to destroy it... that will teach god a lesson, we can do better destruction than he did. Sure he will claim credit.

I wish more people cared about the planet and making more of an effort to save the Earth. Evolution for our species moving to slow to really do anything now.

Good luck with your scenario.

The previous version of the Humanist Manifesto had this:

"...we have opened the door to ecological damage, over-population, dehumanizing institutions, totalitarian repression, and nuclear and bio-chemical disaster. Faced with apocalyptic prophesies and doomsday scenarios, many flee in despair from reason and embrace irrational cults and theologies of withdrawal and retreat."

This, unfortunately, still accurately describes a significant proportion of Americans. And as they continue to embrace conspiracy theories and Russian propaganda the likelihood that they will suddenly wake up and start acting responsibly seems remote. More likely they will cling harder to their guns and religion.
