Can anyone answer Karl Popper's question?

"And who shows greater reverence for mystery, the scientist who devotes himself to discovering it step by step, always ready to submit to facts, and always aware that even his boldest achievement will never be more than a stepping stone for those who come after him, or the mystic who is free to maintain anything because he need not fear any test?"

As a rhetorical question, it is a good one, Paul. It caused me to think. Well done.

According to the wording of the question, clearly the scientist, because he has respect for it. The mystic is presented as a liar. How can he have respect for mystery? He will simply make up something.
True, though, wording of the question aside, that they both have value. The scientist can be so caught up in detail that he does not see practicality, and the mystic can be so caught up in 'what ifs' that he never has the courage to investigate.
One must be as one, and then the other. Rhythm is key. Balance is key.

I disagree that the mystic is presented as a liar. He or she is simply unconcerned by the limitation that their claims are untestable & therefore worthless. This is not an insignificant short coming of all mystical claims.

Define mystic.
