I am somewhere left of Marx and Leinien in my politics. That being said, I am happy to govern from the middle. I am full aware that this nation was created by compromise and it fuctions when we compromise, I also acknoweldge that the last time we really stopped compromising was right before the Civll War. I am ready to compromise. I will give you your wall if you give me the DACA kids.

I was raised on Marx and Lennon. Groucho Marx and John Lennon. They made me laugh and they made me think.

No wall. Disruptive to migrating wildlife. The border patrol does not want it. The financing is stratospheric. Walls are temporary. The current President is impulsive. DACA remains if we have to hide those kids like run away slaves, or Jews, or ex Russian spies.

Dolofivethree, I majored in poli sci. Like a gajillion years ago. The most important event in my life is Watergate. People from both parties did what was right for the country, politics be damned.

I hate that compromise and finding a way forward has become a bad thing.

@Dolores53 I keep hearing the pundits say similar things. But, I also know journalists, and the entire society, tends to make today's event the biggest, or the worse, or "game-changing!" I think obstruction is going to be tough, because "intent" is kind of a fuzzy term. But bank fraud ain't!

Here's hoping.

Are people who are on the opposite extremes really capable of compromising? Wouldn't your nature be to slide further to your side? It's like that story about the scorpion and the frog. It's in your nature.

There are certainly some things I wouldn't compromise on, treating people fairly regardless of accidents of birth such as gender, sexuality, colour, class etc. My job as custodian of animals and the earth. The right for individuals to have power over their bodies and reproductive systems. Sometimes lip service is worth nothing and all some legislation is/ has been.

What's DACA?

& why do you want their kids? 😉

Can't compromise on everything.

Freedom from religion: non-negotiable.
Protecting the environment: non-negotiable.
Freedom of speech, of the press, of assembly, to dissent: non-negotiable.

I have seen too often and poignantly how people get shitty ideas that they clamor to defend: like teaching creationism in schools and not vaccinating your kids. Just, no.

Weight of subscribers does not always lend legitimacy: some things are just wrong. Sometimes you have to say "no way, never, nada".

There was a time when compromise was the goal, or at least the expectation. When we voted our best & brightest into office to represent us in Washington, the State Capital or City Hall … we knew they’d argue on our behalf. But also knew we’d end up with compromise, a situation in which everyone is considered ‘unhappy,’ though often the best result.

I watched former President Jimmy Carter recently describe the problems of today, basically stemming from the ‘Citizens United’ decision, allowing the wealthy to further tip our laws in their favor … and it’s only gotten worse.. Now, we’ve the party of big money in total charge - with no need or desire to just compromise - they want it all!

For me, the question remains: how bad does it have to get before our (US) citizens wise up..? I didn’t think we’d recover from the 2nd term of Reagan, or Bush Jr… And after 8 years of exemplary competence.. ‘This.’ The damage is deep, perhaps too deep. Our society works hardest for the wrong things, chasing the newest gadget or trend instead of appreciating all we have, and looking to pass on as much as we can to those who follow…

It’s ironic that a party and it’s leader proclaiming to make america great again are the very thing having ruined our opportunities to do just that…

As for unlimited illegal immigration, rewarding it simply encourages more. The Republican’s got ‘this one’ right (and it got them the White House) … and the Democrat’s shoot themselves in the head everytime they make it a priority.. Pelosi & Schumer need replaced... Sometimes, it’s Dumb, & Dumber ~

@TjallTjallOUTLK He’s a dead duck … especially after yet ‘another defeat’ yesterday.. The R’s will be running from him. I didn’t expect ‘4 more years’ of Jr, either, but trump’s in a factor ten realm of dysfunction by comparison… Then there’s Pence.. strategically quite ..and incapable of being fired. I’ve religious neighbors that didn’t vote for trump, but think Pence’s a ‘great alternative.’ If the Dems get the House, the worst will be over … till Bader-Ginsburg keels over.. It’s a deep hole ~

Politics and religion are all the same corrupt shit as far as im concerned.

The problem with compromise in this case is that we have a president who is a pathological liar and a con-artist. He has made a lot of money by not following through on his end of deals he's agreed to, and continues to do so now.

I believe in socialism but not scientific socialism. I am very tired of socialism being used as a bad word when we use socialist policies in this country daily and have for hundreds of years.

Yes, there’s the blurred definition between historical, and modern Socialism. I view it as Communism on the far left; Socialism in the middle; and Capitalism on the far right. Modern Socialism is the best balance; Communism failed ..and Capitalism isn’t far behind…

I'm not being pedantic, but I'm not sure what left of Marx and Lenin means. Could you explain that? My own thinking is much influenced by my early life studies of Marxism and other philosophies in socialism and related, and that continues to today. Lenin is not an influence on me. I'm a democratic socialist, if I have to choose a political philosophy position.

Would the diametric opposite of someone who is politically to the Left of Marx and Lenin take the form of someone who is to the far right of Genghis Khan?

@ASTRALMAX totally diametrically opposite, I would think. I would also think left of Marxism would be anarchism, but I asked question in good faith.

I agree. His stupid wall is just a waste of money but the DACA kids matter.

As to political leanings, I hold that politics is not a 1-dimensional problem. It may even be naive to characterize it as 2. Still 2 dimensions give more insight into a persons position. I'm "left libertarian". Politely it is described as Socialist-Libertarian, and no, don't let the righties tell you it is a contradiction. More correctly it is described as Communist-Anarchist, which is what I call myself in my own mind but not in polite company.

The site below characterizes political positions in 2D. I got 8.75, 7.69...
