What happened to all the FUNNY movies? They seemed to fizzle out in the 80's or 90's. Some of my favs were Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, My Cousin Vinny, Young Frankenstein, Throw Mama From the Train, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Blazing Saddles and The Bird Cage. I'm sure I missed some, but "funny" movies just aren't funny any more.

Most movies now are action/comic book crap that I have no interest watching. I miss rom coms too.

I think we just got old and they do not serve our kind of humor anymore... My Cousin Vinny and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, my two favorite comedies of all time!

Who do you mean "we"? 🙂

5

I was thinking of Monty Python and the Holy Grail recently. The best!

And The Life of Brian.

2

Have you seen Burn after Reading and the Hangover movies?

Seen Hangover movies-. Sex and humor.

6

Mel Brooks who wrote several of them is in his 90s now doing a comedy act in Las Vegas as we speak. John Candy who I loved is gone. Billy Crystal doesn't do movies anymore. I think Gene Wilder died. And my fave Robin Williams is gone. Now your comedy actors are The Rock, Adam Sandler, Tina Fey, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon in their own movies-The New Ghostbusters.
Funny is in the eye of the beholder-we lost some major comedy stars

Billy Crystal is still acting. (Believe it or not). [imdb.com]

Didn't know bout Jumanji-remake of his pal Robin Williams

I laughed so hard at this one that my ribs hurt the next day:
The Secret Life of Pets"

We had classics in our time and you do have to hunt for them - but there are still good ones occasionally.

I would guess that your sense of humor perhaps hasn't changed since then? I've seen plenty of movies I think are hilarious; to me, anyway.

Bridesmaids but even that is 2011.

Planes, Trains and Automobiles" is one of my favorites.

Martin/Candy had such a spirit together.

Really sucks that they never got to work together again.

TOMMY BOY. "That's gonna leave a mark!

I can't watch any movie without laughing all through it due to the rediculous, urealistic scenes and story lines.

"Funny" movies are always subject to individual interpretation....and depends a lot on the actors involved. They can make or break the movie. Maybe I'm showing my age, but I just don't think there are as many "star" quality actors anymore.

I agree, they are so stupid anymore. The good ole days are gone! I like watching old episodes of Johnny Carson when I can. He was the best for late nite t.v.

Mabye you stopped being funny. I kid, I kid. I actually really enjoy the movies you listed. But something like Blazing Saddles could not exist today.

I bought that on DVD this year - because watching it on TV every other word was bleeped? Granted some of the words in that had their time - but it's still really funny.

Dumb mindless comedy took over ("Dumb and Dumber" for example). Same reason Trump is president.

"GodBlessAmerica" didn't strike me as stupid, mindless comedy. Nor did "The Invention of Lying".

When Harry Met Sally is probably my favorite but I adored Throw Mama From The Train. I was writing a book, at the time it came out, so the opening scene just killed me (pun intended). I also loved the way "You lied to me" was delivered. Perfect movie.
I think every movie became a Superhero thing and all comedy went to cable.

Oh I LOVE "When Harry Met Sally" --- I used to play over and over when Billy Crystal would spit the grape seeds thinking the car window was open, LOL. It was too perfect. Today's comedy don't have that arresting humor that is sprinkled here and there at the right timing. It's too "forced"...

No shit. I, Tonya is supposed to be a comedy. What's funny about that story? Nothing. There are a few funny movies that come, but they are few and far between. The last good comedy movie I watched was Sausage Party.

3

I tend to prefer darker humor. Examples would include Heathers, Citizen Ruth, and Dogma.

If you like dark humor check out Christina Ricci in "Pumpkin" if you've not already seen it.

That must have been the beginning of what I call the attention deficit era in movie producers.

Adam Sandler put out so many duds they quit making comedys

If I want funny, lately, which I often don't, I'll watch kid movies. Sometimes they are really good. Or maybe I'm just a big kid. I love Lego Batman. I like the Hotel Transylvania movies and Despicable Me.

Some movies made me laugh really hard. The 40 Year Old Virgin. Anchorman (just the first one). Meet the Millers. But they are a bit...low brow.

Guardians of The Galaxy, Deadpool

My guilty pleasure is Superbad. Didn't think I'd like it, but I was falling over in my seat laughing.

Good question. The last comedies I recorded into my cable box are those you actually mentioned. And City Slickers. And Groundhog Day. And ... many more classics.

I have enjoyed the recent action/comedies of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, though. They call it the Cornetto Trilogy: Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World's End. These are certainly different to the classics.

Some recent American comedies that I found actually funny were: Tropic Thunder, The Interview, This is The End. Definitely more crude than Blazing Saddles and The Bird Cage, etc. But weren't Blazing Saddles and The Bird Cage also relatively more pointed than others of the time and previously?

I don't know. I thought kingpin and something about Mary were fantastic. I think a lot of films now are turning into series rather than one good film.

Ok Kingpin was hilarious! I forgot about that one!
