LINK An Idaho College’s Trustee Controversy Involves a Student’s “Godless” Pledge | Hemant Mehta | Friendly Atheist | Patheos

Last May, during a pandemic-fueled live-streamed graduation ceremony at North Idaho College, Kai Sedlmayer-Nardi had the honor of deliver the Pledge of Allegiance since she was the student body vice president. (She has since become president.)

But she wasn’t content to just deliver the Pledge as written. After all, she’s also the founder of the school’s Secular Student Alliance chapter.

So when it was her time to speak, she said the Pledge without the words “Under God” (follos link for video)

Interesting to note that in the Senate's page, there is no mention of the Eisenhower era revision.

[cop.senate.gov]

Interestingly enough, I was at a Senate opening session where Strom Thurmond was there for the pledge. Pastor Lloyd Ogilve had just given the opening prayer (the entire thing consisting of variations of, "Oh Lord, what lowly, wretched worms we are" ). I recited the pledge along with the crowd, but continued on (loudly) omitting the "under God" part, putting me out of sync with everyone else. Thurmond looked directly at me in the gallery, glaring intensely. I was half expecting Capitol police to come arrest me or forcibly escort me out of the building. In my mind, I was preparing my defense that I was reciting the original. Regardless, I was within my right as its inclusion is bullshit.

I don't understand, during these times why anyone would even want to say the pledge. Even SCOTUS has ruled no one should be made to say this shallow statement even without the godfree statement.

I always leave “under god” out when I say the pledge.

Me too.

As it should be.
I am not under god nor do I trust in a god

"Under god" should be removed form the pledge.

What does under god even mean. Someone please enlighten me??

@Healthydoc70 "Under god" as in the pledge refers to a nation that is under a god and has god's laws. This is what many believe about America and its founding, but we were not funded with a god in mind. Eisenhower had the words "under god" added later so as to counter "godless communism." Those words "under god" should be removed from the pledge. They do not belong there.

That is the Pledge as written. Or were you referring to the amended pledge?

Under God was never part of the pledge. It was added after WWII during the McCarthy era. Indivisible seems to have gone down the tubes with these religious right wing pieces of human excrement.

Well, while we are at it, “liberty and justice for all” is suspect as well

It’s about time that it’s removed from it since it wasn’t originally there in the first place. Same with that damn “In god we trust” on all US Currency as well as courtrooms.

E pluribus unum
