I'm probably going to be spending a bit more time here than I have been. That testimony about Facebook was rough. I am a medical professional and my profession specifically deals with eating disorders. I'm also a tobacco treatment specialist. Hearing her testify that Facebook allowed vaping companies to specifically target underage demographics, was disgusting.
What are your thoughts?
Companies have a right to make a profit, they don't have a right to harm the public in the pursuit of such. Sadly corporate America has such a stranglehold on both government and the media that this distinction is now lost for many if not most Americans. Starting to think Marx and others were right, the system is so flawed that only tearing it down and starting over will fix it. Short version: We're fucked.
Given the apathy most folks I encounter exhibit wrt. privacy, and what LITTLE Facebook cares about it, I fail to see how anyone should be surprised about whatever FB has done or will do.
There is a very large section of Americans who fall into one of these categories: they get their only news and views from one of the Right Wing crazy sudo news outlets. Or, they just totally ignore news all together, live in their own little world and don’t even want to know what’s going on in their own neighborhood. I know some of both, and consider both a threat to democracy.
