Should gambling be legal in the U.S.?

Gambling, are you for or against it?

Thinking points:

Benefits to the economy vs. detriments to oneself?
Recreational outlet vs. neurologically addictive properties?
Job creation vs. personal debt creation?
Illegal gambling reduced vs. a wide-spread habit created?

--- and whatever else you want to add!

As someone who has struggled with addiction (sober since 8/29/2013) if those are the metrics measured to make it illegal then alcohol shouldn’t be legal either. Gambling addiction costs to society are a considerably distant second to alcohol.

@DangerDave thanks and a hit tip to you as well!

Congratulations on your sobriety. I just celebrated 50 years. Prohibition didn't work on alcohol, the war on drugs is counter-productive and I think the same would be true of gambling.

I don't gamble, and don't find it interesting, but I think I do like it the way it is now. You travel, you eat at the bacchanalian buffet, you come back with less money and more shame. Sounds like the circle of life to me. Or, as I like to call it, thursday night.

There is nothing wrong with gambling as long as you don't make a habit...I play the lottery..so yeah why not..horseracing on the other hand should be illegal 100% no animal should be used for human greed

Really research the corruption and shady shit that goes on in the horse racing industry...I'm not saying all owners are abusive..but a lot are in it for the money and don't really care about the horses..when they stop winning races they go to auction...there have been horses saved from meat auctions that made millions for their owners...and yet when they couldn't race anymore their shitty rich owners refused to pay for their retirement care and keep..it's disgraceful

Gambling, is like drugs or prostitution. people will do it all weather it is legal or not. It may s well be legal, well regulated and taxed, or else organized crime will be the only ones to make all the money to be made from it without regulation which is more dangerous, and more expensive, to the public well beign over the long run.

I think prostitution and drugs should be legal too

Other.
It could be legalized in particular places rather than completely widespread.
I know there are Indian casinos besides Vegas and Atlantic City, and I know there are gambling boats like near where I grew up in NW Indiana.
There are a number of large casino ships on Lake Michigan that are legal. When they first opened, they had to leave the dock and go out 1 mile, that didn't last long, now they never move and are more or less like buildings.

I don't like to gamble or watch anyone else lose their hard earned money period. I've gone with friends to Mohegan Sun/Foxwoods in CT, Atlantic City and Las Vegas. Like the shows not the gambling.

I'm big on personal responsibility and on limiting the government from playing "father" in protecting me from the evils of the world, so those alone compel me to say it should be legal.

I remember the ruckus over church bingo games: technically gambling, but they let it slide. It's always about the money: Texas rakes in billions on the lottery and looks askance at that while chastely refusing to allow casinos in the state. There are better odds in a casino than there are in a state lottery but no one seems to be worried about gamblers in that instance.

It's lovely when you play Devil's Advocate, @SilverEyes! Yep, in typical Texas style, they SAID the money would go to schooling but it went into the general fund for years until they were found out. Now, about 27% or something goes towards education. Casino's could compete in another way, though. They bring tourism to an area and jobs (albeit not always great ones). I'm not saying I'd want them in my town because they also bring crime but some places seem to think it's worth it.

I've never had a gambling addiction so my vote comes from ignorance. But I believe in freedom over control. I look at it like drugs. I think the majority of drugs should be legalized, taxed and regulated and more funding into rehabilitation for those who struggle with addiction. I would try to approach gambling in a similar manner.

It's a hot topic for sure. IMHO, we gotta weigh the pros and cons of gambling carefully. On the one hand, it can be a fun recreational outlet, create jobs, and bring in tourism and revenue to local economies. On the flip side, it can be addictive and cause major debt problems. Meanwhile, those who wanna play their favorite gambling games today can use [ufazbet.com] . Though we gotta think about the possible effects of legalization, and what regs could be put in place to protect more vulnerable ppl. Plus, illegal gambling still happens, and if it was legal it could reduce crime related to it. All in all, it's a complex issue and requires some serious consideration.

Gambling is legal in the US at the federal level. States can choose to make it illegal if the choose to but that's usually based on voter input. I think I would say I like the system we have in place where the population of a given state chooses whether or not to make it illegal.

Yeah, I understood, and it was a good question, but my answer was I like it to be the way it is, which is to allow states popular vote to decide. So I guess my answer would be no I don't think it should be a mandatory federal law.

I'm the one other. I kind of like it the way it is, where you have to go somewhere specific to gamble in person or do it on your smartphone digitally. You can gamble anywhere you can get reception, I think.

I suggest to you that lives are ruined by a lot of things, gambling being just one of the panoply. Drugs are pretty much illegal across the board and that has not been a solution. Alcohol is openly legal, yet ruins lives in substantial numbers. That's just two -- there are others. Gauging by the results of the last presidential election, gambling was legal there and we lost. Lives are being ruined left and right and a large portion of the country appears to be all right with that. As it stands now, gambling is legal in some areas of the country and people from places where it is illegal just go there to gamble anyway. Why not keep it at home so the states and cities can benefit throughout the country and people don't have to take their lives into their own hands by driving all night from Los Angeles to Las Vegas?

It pays a lot of salaries around here. Self control is a personal problem and effects families and that's sad. The rich want to play here and that's great. It pays taxes too. I'm for it. Hmmm... I watched a lot of my friends kill themself for overtime so they can strut into the casinos and everybody knows their name...lol. they where that highroller face. Some of them hit big money, pay the taxes, and loose it all back. It was fun to see the excitement and dreams of hitting it again. I've watched some of them ask others if they wanted to buy their watch or ring. So they could get some of it back.. It's tough... that kind of life.

One could say this is yet another thing that the US lags behind when compared to the rest of the world.

Someone close to me has a gambling problem. She claims is the "high" of the action. Debts are the "low". I live in Vegas... currently staying until end of the year in Maryland 5 minutes drive from a Casino. I only go there to dance. All I see when I go is Sad Faces... the same Sadness in different faces and yet they keep coming back and back and back and is not for the food or the music. Not interested in Gambling or Prostitution but that is another Sin for another time and date. I just refuse to throw away my money for an illusion not Real.

Casino gambling is illegal in Texas. We have to go to Oklahoma or Lousiana. But you can legally gamble (lotto) in any convenience store or service station. I get annoyed having to wait in line behind gamblers when the only thing I want is $20 worth of gas.

I think it is forall intense purposes

I think that gambling should be legalized. Furthermore, I see nothing negative in gambling for the government. If they keep chasing it, a casino can get even more popular, and secret casinos still get more. So I think it’s better to let people play and relax. I like playing at Satta king, and it’s not more than a hobby. It’s like fishing; you can lose or win. It’s thrilling and interesting not to know what is going to be the next second. That way, I see no problems considering that pastime. You can avoid it if you feel that you get addicted easily. There’re a lot of people who manage to spend small sums on it and gain more

Yes, because it's another one of those silly vices that religion harps about.

It makes no difference to me. Commercialized gambling is always a winner for the house. However, gambling, for some, is addictive and can destroy a life, much like it did for my brother.
