Today I received the following interesting news from America - proposed action to reign in big tech companies' abuse of people's rights?

Big Tech monopolies harm people everyday, but so far these companies have crushed every attempt to stop them. Now, we have a chance to take back control: Tell Congress to support the Big Tech antitrust bills.

TAKE ACTION
Tech monopolies like Facebook, Google, Apple, and Amazon control a huge portion of the Internet and dominate our digital lives. These companies abuse their gatekeeper status to undermine human rights, distort democracy, abuse our personal data, censor content, and stifle competition.

But the good news is that Congress is currently considering a slate of antitrust bills targeting major tech companies, and two of them are especially promising:

The American Innovation and Choice Online Act (H.R. 3816, S. 2992) would stop the biggest tech companies from preferring their own products in search results and ban them from using competitors’ data to build their own products.1 The bill would also make it easier for State Attorney Generals and federal agencies to bring antitrust cases against tech companies.

The Open App Markets Act (H.R. 5017, S. 2710) would stop big tech companies that provide hardware or operating systems for phones and general-purpose computers (e.g. Apple) from forcing device owners to use their app store.2 The bill would require these companies to let their users install apps directly, choose alternative app stores, uninstall pre-packaged apps, and change the default apps. This would be huge.

Both of these bills would increase consumer choice by enabling smaller companies to compete in the market. More competition means that better alternatives can take root, giving us a chance to take back our digital lives. And they are gaining momentum and have a chance of coming to a vote this month!

The truth is that this could be Congress’s only meaningful shot at addressing Big Tech monopolies, and we can’t let them waste it. It’s time for us to take back control of our digital lives. Tell lawmakers that we need Big Tech antitrust laws now.

For a brighter future,

Every Democrat will vote for antitrust legislation and every Republican will vote against.

Stupid is as stupid does.

[en.m.wikipedia.org]

These are Cipolla's five fundamental laws of stupidity:

  1. Always and inevitably everyone underestimates the number of stupid individuals in circulation.
  2. The probability that a certain person (will) be stupid is independent of any other characteristic of that person.
  3. A stupid person is a person who causes losses to another person or to a group of persons while himself deriving no gain and even possibly incurring losses.
  4. Non-stupid people always underestimate the damaging power of stupid individuals. In particular non-stupid people constantly forget that at all times and places and under any circumstances to deal and/or associate with stupid people always turns out to be a costly mistake.
  5. A stupid person is the most dangerous type of person.

Corollary: a stupid person is more dangerous than a pillager.
