LINK The Loss of Anonymity and More? Mass Surveillance and Facial Recognition - TheHumanist.com

With a failed justice system that criminalizes class and race (disproportionately affecting people of color and low-income communities) and with a militarized police force that encourages abuse of power, should we invest in a mass surveillance system that has been found to misidentify people of color and women? Not only is this technology at risk of perpetuating racial biases, but there’s a strong chance that it can lead to false arrests. Ultimately, innocent people will need to spend time and resources proving themselves innocent, if given the chance at all. If we’re truly invested in addressing crime through the use of cameras, perhaps we should start by attaching body-worn cameras (that cannot be shut off) to all our police officers.
