When people are more loyal to political identity and tribe than to science, it is no different than being more loyal to religious identity and tribe than to science. Superstition is superstition, be it religious or political. Tribalism is tribalism.

I prefer to stick with the science, no matter what it says. And that’s not because I identify with scientists - I’m an artist. It’s not because folks who trust science are my tribe. It’s because science has a proven track record of producing more reliable results in the real world, including in life-or-death matters.

People who fall under the spell of tribal identity to the exclusion of peer reviewed science are literally risking their lives ( and the lives of others ) for the false comfort of tribal identity, by way of the very same psychological mechanisms at play in religious literalism.

Unfortunately, too many subscribe to loyalty as the prime virtue as it is easier than actually thinking and it can work for all areas, liberal and conservative. I once belonged to a local group here, transitions, which follows the international group of the same name [transitionlopezisland.org]. The leader refused to get into areas she did not understand (vegetarianism and overpopulation - I wanted to do a presentation on the negative environmental impact of some charitable organizations). I got into a debate with a member about a 19th century economist who theorized making things more efficient actually increased their usage. We went back a forth a while but he finally said he didn't want to think about complicated subjects (to him) and simply followed orders. I lost a lot of respect for the guy.

I follow a work press group overpopulation project and the latest one was about populism and the recent swing in Italian politics in electing a far right woman as their leader. I witnessed this topic in Germany in the early 90's. Unfortunately, it's where the whole world is headed. Hope this comes up and if not I can try again.

That's obvious, isn't it?
And depressing, because it means democracy isn't viable, because it relies on facts and common sense.

Just read an article about a survey that showed "at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, more than 40% of Americans were untruthful about whether they had the virus or were ignoring safety precautions.
I feel this propensity for being untruthful goes hand in hand with the tribalism we see not just in America but around the world.
We've all seen the lack of honesty within religion and I'll just leave it at that.
Here's a link to the article.

All good but I wonder when medical science became the only science, over-riding all others. I know for sure that medical scientists know shit about the science of risk assessment and hazard control methodology for instance. Social sciences are also science eg crowd control measures.
"Science" has just become a catch phrase now in 2022. It is the scientific method of discovery that is important. This includes observation and peer review which was denied with covid vax's by locking up initial trial data, used to emergency approve these medicines, for 75 years eg how may "peers" reviewed that data?
I have no problem officials releasing new information/ studies as they come to light as these medicines are experimental after all so new information should be released as it comes available. Can only aid in people making their own, informed choice. Consent. Haven't really seen much science contradicting official lines really, wonder why that is? Because it has been actively suppressed, which is coming out.

I concur, and this very site is a good example of tribalism run amok. That mentality has turned off a number of members most of whom had vacated the site, the most recent example being TheMiddleWay. After awhile the toxic environment got to be too much for him, and can't say I blamed him either for feeling that way.

I could easily picture Freddy Krueger running on the Republican ticket, with Jason Voorhees running on the Democratic ticket.... and Ash Williams running as an Independent, lol. Those voting for Freddy would claim his past matters not to them so long as he protects them from the Democrats, while those on the left would not be bothered by Jason's past so long as he protects them from the Republicans, and on and on it goes. Ash would "protect" everyone from the crooked politicians.

Tribalism runs strong and deep in human genetics. Science ( reality ) doesn't care what anyone's political affiliation is.
