My take on it. Accepting that Lot existed and did indeed father his own grandchildren, it was merely an act of incest. As you point out, if he was passed out he would not be able to accomplish erection/ejaculation, thus no babies.
Incest was frowned upon however so when his daughters turned up pregnant by him, the best way for him to maintain his good standing was to place the blame squarely on the females. It had to be carried to the extreme of claiming THEY got him so wasted that he actually passed out so he could be held accountable for none of it. Without being passed out, even if they got him liquored up and put serious moves on him, it could still be thought, by his peers, that he could have made a choice to not engage in the act with his daughters. The status of females being significantly lower than that of men assured that HE would be believed, even if his daughters told a different story. There was definitely no magic in it.
