Who celebrates Columbus anywhere else but in the USA? I guess they must otherwise they would have to rename much of their stuff. District of Erikson? Þorfinnr Karlsefni University? Freydís Eiríksdóttir, Ohio? They do have a romantic ring, better than, say, District of Portuguese Fishermen.

Possibly the Italians and the Spanish, but the real thing was that he was perhaps the first Roman Catholic in the New World, and therefore he was important because that gave the Vatican the chance to claim it for the R. C. empires.
Funny how we think of America being discovered when there were people here already who have kept their history recorded for over 14,000 years and cities 10 times the size of any in Europe at the time.

Celebration of Columbus comes from Italian-Americans who, when they arrived, saw Irish-Americans celebrating St. Patrick's Day.So the Italian-Americans gave us Columbus Day. I view it as one of those harmless ethnic celebrations, similar to the small-town 'founders day' events, that were once popular. I can remember when Michigan towns founded by Finns, would break out in Finnish flags, towns founded by Swedes would break out in Swedish flags, etc., once a year, to celebrate their founding, as well as ethnicity. All harmless fun. And to be expected in what I call a 'settler country', that is, a country where most of the population originally came from somewhere else.

His real discovery was the Atlantic wind patterns, the trades and the westerlies. Many of the people who came before, including perhaps fishermen from northern Europe, who possibly were already using the Grand Banks and therefore almost certainly knew of Newfoundland, would of course have kept their discoveries secret.
