Q I am moving and will not be able to bring my cat that has been with me for 2 yrs? she really loves to be outdoors and loves to take walks on a leash just like a dog and doesn’t get freaked out at all. Do you think she could’ve previously been feral and/or could be feral again or at least indoor/outdoor? Or would that just be considered abandonment?

Do NOT abandon her — she neds someone to care for her or it is definitely abandonment.

No idea your situation, but I know when I was a kid and my family went on sabbatical, my folks rented out our house. They literally wrote the cat into the contract to make sure he was well cared for. I guess I just reread this, and it sounds like this is permanent (I read it as just two years). Regardless, look for someone who will take her and love her. Check with animal rescue places. No dumping.

If you need to leave her behind and no friends or acquaintances come to mind try the local Humane Society, do not just abandon her.

I wish I could take her! Looks like you got the advice you needed. I sure hope she has a happy life. 😟

That doesn't sound like a former feral cat. I have worked with many ferals. If she was an adult feral when you adopted her, she would never act 100% domesticated. If she was a feral kitten, she would act more domesticated and would not know how to survive alone outdoors. Because we are rural here, we get a lot of people dumping cats and kittens. They become someone else's problem.

I do understand that sometimes you just can't take your pets when you move. As others have suggested, please try shelters and rescues. It probably would not be easy because this time of year, most rescues and shelters are packed full of cats and kittens. Try relatives, neighbours, friends, friends of friends, or placing rehome ads (with a small fee).

Thank you see these are things I didn’t know and I’m glad you could answer them. I wanted there to be a way I could still have her but I may have to go the rehoming route. It’s going to difficult I’ll miss her so much ?

@Cms0428 I’ve helped people rehome cats and I’ve adopted some from others too. I wish I could help. If you use Facebook there might be local groups or pages that allow you to post pets for rehomes. Unless you know the person, always ask a small fee, even $10-20 to reduce chances of it being someone who wants to abuse animals. Rehoming cats is not easy because so many need homes. A lot of rescues also do not take owner surrenders. But give them a try anyway. Good luck.

Please take the cat to a no kill shelter.

Yes it would be abandonment and she most likely would die. Not to be rude but, are you some kind of an idiot?

Here is a list of no kill shelters and fosters in your area:

Way kinder than abandoning a house cat to the outdoors. (It's very likely to die there).

Frankly most people would be pleased to find a cat willing to walk on a leash.
I imagine the cat could find an excellent home.

Thanks so much! I really appreciate your advice that makes me feel a little better about the situation

It’s abandonment If you really don’t want to take her with you, I would encourage you to find a no-kill shelter if your friends and family members aren’t interested.

I have nightmares about my cats being outside alone. I could never live without them. If I had to live in a car they would be right there with me. It is hard to understand how you could walk away and have no idea if they were ok or not. So yes it would be abandonment.

Beverly78 Level 4 Oct 26, 2018

Yes I am upset that I can’t provide a home for her anymore and don’t want to give her to a stranger. She cries to be let outside she loves it that’s why I had the idea.

You're gonna get some flack on this. In fact one has to even wonder if it's a troll post. You might want to explain how it is you are moving where you can't bring your cat, because to many people your post is the equivalent of "Well, can't bring my kids to my new home, so putting them up for adoption." And no, please don't abandon your cat, at least find a good home for it. I'm sure lots of people here can give good advice on how to do that. Good luck to you and your kitty. 🙂

Thank you No no trolling here it was an honest question so I’m not worried about flack from people I don’t even know ??‍♀️ I am moving with family who are not super cat friendly It’s a complicated situation that I wasn’t expecting to be in and I am just trying to come up with the best solution.I actually am sure she would be a great indoor/outdoor cat because she loves begs to go outside all the time. I never said I would just throw my cat out people are so judgemental ?

2 years? That is strong bond to just get up and leave...Your friends or family should take her in!!!!

Yes I am trying to do everything I can to not have to take her to the shelter I am so sad to lose her ?

@Cms0428 The only thing I miss from my breakup is my furbabies...3 are pictured on my profile..

Do you consider abandoning all of your friends if you find they're suddenly inconvenient?? Would you leave a child alone and unprepared in the middle of the woods?? In the interests of preserving a modicum of polite speech, I will refrain from telling you what I think of you.
