My indoor black cat ran away yesterday. I looked all over the neighborhood. That fatty would normally come running if I shake his food container unless someone has him indoors or he died. It's about to rain. When should I give up hope of ever seeing him again?
A cat I had went missing once. I think some neighborhood kids had her locked up. I went around the block looking for her and shaking the treat box, a sure way to make her come home. One of the kids I crossed paths with said that he saw her go, that way (wasn't really clear). I knew then that he must have been involved. Later that night she did come home and wouldn't go out again for a couple of months. Keep looking. Put up posters.
I hope you get your kitty back. I am sure it is stressful waiting, but do what you can without holding yourself to an impossible standard. Good luck and best wishes.
It's way too soon to give up! Post fliers in public places and post on lost pet sites within social media online.
I had two cats disappear. One was shut in on a lady's porch as she was trying to "tame" him (lured him with food). The other was treed due to an emerging nerve problem. In both cases, I got them back. The latter was gone for over three weeks.
No. The first thing to try is go outside and call/shake food container between midnight and 4am. I kid you not. As an indoor cat he may very well have gone to ground terrified somewhere nearby. In the middle of the night he will feel safest because of the quiet and darkness, I've known many people who have gotten their cat home this way. There are other things, but that's number one. Is he shut in a cupboard or hiding under the bed?
Who let him out? Give up - not until you see the body. Is your cat old or ill? Does he have a microchip? Is he registered with your local council?
Have you contacted the council, stray animal shelters? Put up wanted posters in the neighbourhood, advertised in the local paper or radio?
I'm assuming your cat has been "fixed". I'd be out there for at least a week with the shaking food container. Even after that, with cats you can never tell, he could show up anytime. I'm just glad it's not near Halloween!
Put his litter box and some of your dirty laundry outside, or next to an open window. If he's within a few miles, he should return.
But also check with neighbors. He could have gotten locked in a garage or shed they only open occasionally. Animals have starved that way.
