I did that on vacation once I watched this dog being let out of a car on leash it was dying to be petted and I was all "Hello gorgeous" pretty much forgetting it was attached to a human?
The human was okay with it though.

All the time. I have one neighbor cat I've learned to be wary of. He acts like he wants to be petted, and then he nails you! Now I just talk to him. He likes to come up on my deck and "dance" with my kitties through the door.
