The United States does not have a modern democracy, not anymore. Try Europe. Also, the term "fair" is highly subjective. We will never have a completely fair system, but we need to work hard do make it better.

We need to get Citizens United out of Government. The Electoral College has run its course & needs to end. Gerrymandering should be set up on North/South & East/West lines. All Votes should count equally.

One of the reasons for the Electoral College was that most Americans in 1789 could not read and, therefore, could not be well informed as to who was running for President.

Today, we have Trumpsters who do not want to be informed as to the leader of our great nation. They do not listen, leaving their collective heads in the sand as the world crumbles about them.

Can anything be done to improve the systems? Better access to education, especially higher education would be a start. An understanding of the government at the high school level would not hurt either. And let's stop forcing Ayn Rand on high schoolers who can't really understand the philosophy.

In Michigan, some people worked very hard collecting signatures and getting language approved to put the legalization of marijuana on the ballot. Both pro and con spent a lot of money on the proposal. It passed. But now, the anti-pot crowd is doing everything they can to limit and/or block the implementation of the law. Local bans and such. It's just a slap in the face to the democratic process and voter suppression, IMO. Many of the people who worked hard to get it passed were not regulars in the political arena. Now, they see their hard work and opinions shat upon.

Yes. And the first thing that needs to be done, IMO, is to overhaul the entire election process. Starting with automatic voter registration at age 18 and Ranked Choice Voting by paper ballot with receipts.

If we actually had a democracy..... No problem I think a tiny tax break for voting would improve turnout. We are capitalist you know.

Yes. You cannot even record that none of the presenting candidates are worthy of representing you let alone that they be allowed free unfettered right to vote against party dictate.

The first issue with American democracy is that it's not a democracy. Maybe with modern technology, it would be feasible to create a true democracy, but that's not going to happen.

We should get ready of lobbyists, political contributions, and the Senate; then we need to revise the Supreme Court so that justices can be reviewed and possibly replaced by popular vote.

I think what we have now is globalised democracy, in that our political parties are all servants of the global market so there is no difference between them except maybe 'the narcissism of small difference'.
