AOC makes a clever but also broad statement, which leaves wide latitude for listeners to consider good motives for increasing socialist elements in society, but without getting immediately bogged down in political arguments over specific socialist strategies or specific policy fights.

Personally, I like the Scandinavian democratic socialist idea, which is really modified capitalism, or capitalism with a heart. I think we should be able to reward creative entrepraneurial effort and talent with financial payoff, but first priority should be ensuring a basic social safety net for all. Actually providing that safety net would allow more would-be entrepraneurs to take those enterprising risk, because they would not have to fear utter life-threatening disaster if their venture fails. We don't need, and should not expect, absolute equality financially. We DO need basic protections.

1. I think if society adopts equality of outcome, the incentive to improve quality product is lost
2. I think a basic universal wage could work to provide the basics without bankrupting the country
3. I think social democracy would really help to provide good social services

AOC is one smart cookie.

The growth of anti neo-liberalism and anti economic rationalism is such a threat to reactionary forces now, whether in the US or even here in Australia. Ms Ocasio-Cortez is a good example of how this progressive politics can no longer be subverted with the usual "liberals!" "Socialists!" attack. Is it possible to dare to hope to see the end of "private enterprise does everything better", "free enterprise and free markets solve all problems", and notions that the less tax the wealthy pay and the more obscene wealth they accumulate, the more wealth trickles down to make a fair and just society. I truly hope so.
