This may sound counterintuitive, but being an introvert actually has been of considerable benefit to me in public speaking. Public speaking is typically listed as the #1 fear that people have. For me, however, public speaking always has had an unreal quality to it. Though I can get nervous talking to individuals or just a few people, I have never been able to relate to a large crowd. It's almost like talking to myself in a bubble. As long as I am well-rehearsed and prepared its not a problem. Strange, huh?
I always found public speaking worked fine as long as I didn't think about the audience and thought about the argument the argument was energizing. The other people were irrelevant
Off-topic question: Why does Humanistheathen's comment ask 'approve this comment?'
I think it's level 6, when you start seeing comments of other members before they are published and get the option to approve them, for the benefit of the community.
@thislife hmmm...but, he's level 3...
@crazycurlz I meant when you got to level 6, you can approve the comments of the "underlings"
@thislife oh, got it! ty
I agree, and I've read that a lot of actors are introverted. I was a teacher for a while (which definitely helped make me more extroverted and comfortable around people, but not enough so to keep teaching as a career). As long as I was confident in my subject matter, had a plan in place, and focused on the needs of the students, I felt very comfortable in that role. But energy wise, it was very draining.
Henry Fonda and Michael Jackson were introverts.
My brother-in-law is an introvert and an actor, and he was the managing director of a theatre company. I asked him once how he could do all the fundraising, handshaking, in-the-newspapers, constant events thing given that he was an introvert, and he told me it was easy: He's an actor, so when he's doing that stuff, he's acting the role of a managing director. It must be an acting thing because I don't think I could do it for any extended period of time.
