Pollinators?
We really like, and are fascinated by the variety of bees, hornets, and wasps we see here. I'll have to take a picture later in the season of some of our sedum when in bloom.
It is so beautiful, so peaceful.
Thanks. Keeping it up isn't too bad once we got it established. The other side looks worse. We're expanding it and adding some additional tall perinials to it.
Maybe add a bee hive in the back corner?
Yes! Not a hive though. We've a beekeeper about 1/2 mile from us. But! A "bee hotel" for the non-honey bee varieties!. I've got the proper wood in my shop... cut and ready to drill holes in!
How close can you put a small hive to where kids play? I want a hive, but I can't find any information on how much space they need
@CraeftSmith I think it is a by-law issue and in Ontario, Canada where I live it is 30 metres from the property line in any direction so I could easily do it on my property which is 4 acres.
@bigpawbullets The beekeeper down the road from us lost all his hives when the farm beside him started planting that Monsanto Round Up Ready Soya Bean, two season and all six of his hives were dead. I am at the other end of the island and I am thinking about giving it a go, hopefully I am far enough away from the pesticides that killed the other hives. On my list of to dos.
@Surfpirate It is more likely that the neonic's in the treatment on the soybeans seed was the culprit than the Round-up in the bee murder. Round-up use can harm bees but, it doesn't cause total hive collapse. The NFU has been trying to get neonic's banned for the last 5 years here in Canada for just this reason.
@Surfpirate thanks!

Posted by KateOahuI saw some pretty flowers on a walk today. I’d never seen a white Hibiscus before. And I do not know what the pink flowers are.
