I purchased 3 lilac bushes to attract butterflies in a sunny part of my back yard. The ground was really bad so I replaced 5x5x2 area for each one with gardener soil for plants, soil amendment and loomy (sp?) top soil. All 3 died within two weeks. I did water. What did I miss?

I went to college for this. When you plant like that you make a hole that collects water around the plants' roots and it can't drain away. I would spread compost over the entire planting area and rototill it in. Plant them in the amended native soil--don't replace it. Dig the holes exactly the depth of the root balls or even a bit shallower. Backfill with the same amended native soil and have the surface level with the surface of the root ball's soil. Then mulch with organic material and water well.

I think I will change the planting spaces and see what happens

I planted lilacs in native clay with no problem. Did you possibly plant them too deeply?

the instruction said to keep the lip of the plant ball flush with ground

is your ground heavy clay? maybe the drainage was too poor and they ended up being overwatered? that is strange

yes a lot of clay

@scout123456 my parents killed several trees, not that fast , but due to that. they had to dig laterals on the hole so the drainage would improve. Otherwise it was like it was sitting in a bowl of water. I did the same

Posted by KateOahuI saw some pretty flowers on a walk today. I’d never seen a white Hibiscus before. And I do not know what the pink flowers are.
