Brendan and I planted 4 Gooseberry bushes tonight. I used fish emulsion in water as the fertilizer.
Tomorrow I will plant stakes, both for markers in the winter and support as they grow.
The wheelbarrow is hosting two very healthy yellow squash plants with many blossoms and some small fruit. No idea where they came from. We did not plant squash last year.
Hurrah for volunteers.
Gooseberries are great. I have about 2 lbs frozen and will mix them with blueberries, blackberries and Mulberries for a preserve. However, they can be a pain (literally) to pick and the sawflies will destroy the leaves. What varieties?
This is a reddish berry, I forgot the name. The ones we had in Germany were green and quite large and juicy. It was my job to pick the berries along with the red currants. Small kids' hands are best for getting around the thorns.
@Spinliesel The variety I had in Seattle was called 'poormans' gooseberry [raintreenursery.com] It was the only berry I had there so was self-fertile and got to be a large, thorny, bush.
@JackPedigo Thank you for the link. I was working with Tessa who runs an experimentsl farm in the county. She only had one source for Gooseberries and Currnats, and they were often out of plants. I will try raintree nursery. They have a great selection of berries, but shipping cost are very high.
@Spinliesel Interesting that they will send to the other side of the country. It's a great nursery in the area of Mt. St. Helens.

Posted by KateOahuI saw some pretty flowers on a walk today. I’d never seen a white Hibiscus before. And I do not know what the pink flowers are.
