About a week ago I showed you the red bottle brush seen through the kitchen window. Here they are in full bloom, seen over the fence.

A beautiiful tree...and hummingbirds love it!

But its' a bit of a pest....has no natural enemies because it's a recently imported exotic...and its' root systems play havoc with underground pipes....

Good to know.

I had a Bay Laurel on my property and it was above a sewer line. I asked a landscape architect friend if I had to worry about the roots. He didn't know and said I needed to ask a plumber. Makes sense.

@JackPedigo plumbers blame all trees.

@FrayedBear I wonder. A friend had a clogged sewer line and a plumber sent a video line through the pipe and it showed a lot of roots had gotten into the line (it was an older ceramic pipe and prone to sweating). The culprit was an older but small Juniper. The plumber said these plants have very deep roots so it's not just trees. However, I'll bet that cities that are looking to plant trees consult plumbers to get advice on ones that are not problematic for plumbing.

@JackPedigo It would make sense but that is frequently lacking. A few years ago I rented a place that was supposed to have two 90 yo gum trees protecting one side of the house. They were about 10 feet in diameter. Between renting and moving in they cut them down. The noise from loss of their sound protection resulted in 9 month's sleeplessness.

Posted by KateOahuI saw some pretty flowers on a walk today. I’d never seen a white Hibiscus before. And I do not know what the pink flowers are.
