Isolation is suiting me well: turns out I’m an introvert which was news to me. But I’ve loved throwing self into some new projects.
So the plants in pots are doing well. I’ve built a new little greenhouse - well - small footprint but tall. And the raised beds are coming on. I haven’t worked out how to stop the snails or slugs but I have bought a big load of pigeon netting to cover all the seedlings that are just getting going in that greenhouse.
Next up I need to make some flower beds and plant them up: I bought a couple of dahlias yesterday (the local nurseries are delivering which is pretty helpful). That’s for today.
In the pictures there are the results of the random planting I do all the time. If I think it might grow I plant it. So last year I put a load of peach and flat peach stones together with cherry pits into pots which were otherwise growing herbs or something. The peaches and cherries did nothing (as usual) but 3 of the flat peaches have germinated and are looking pretty happy this morning in their pots. Delighted with that.
And then the Echiums - aka bee trees: they grow fantastically here in the Channel Islands and I’ve got three coming on nicely, transplanted last summer when we moved house. They weren’t overjoyed about the move and missus has called one of them Jesus because it really did look proper dead for a bit. And I’ve ordered some cobaea - Cathedral Bell vine seeds from eBay. I need some colour and I think climbers would be good.
I’ve really been enjoying finding little spots to plant among the existing stuff, taking out weeds or over zealous spreaders - to create a little patch to put peas in, or sunflowers along a back wall, or sweet corn. Ive planted tomatoes round a buried pot as someone in here showed last year. And I’ve planted a zillion runner beans around a simple three way scaffold of long fig branches but none have come thru. I have a suspicion they’re just getting munched as soon as anything shows. So now I’m scared to plant out the seedlings I’ve grown as back up. Without going chemical mad how do I stop the snails and slugs????
And my next is to get some climbers up the side of the house. Really don’t know what to do there but something striking I think. Anyway...
For me isolation can’t go on for too long. I’m loving it!
(Apologies about a couple of the photos being sideways: I can’t fix it. I saved one down - rotated through 90 degrees but the site just put it back...)
Everything looks fabulous!
@OwlInASack If your “mess” gives you pleasure then it’s a beautiful mess! Thanks for sharing the pics!
Sounds very industrious. As for the snails, I have been having good results using 2L plastic bottles I cut into 3in high cylinders and wrap once around with adhesive copper ribbon. The copper reacts with snail and slug slime and gives them a little shock. When the seedling is big enough to fend for itself a bit, the rings are easy to remove. They have the added benefit of discouraging my half a dozen outside cats from lounging right on top of the baby plants. I got the ribbon from Amazon.
Wow, such industry, and it all looks great!
I am a lower energy introvert.
The mini-green house is a seriously well done project. Good job. If you took photos while you were making it...please post them!
@OwlInASack great job!
@OwlInASack Re-cycled wood? bartered, repurposed plastic? Wow...that's awesome! That gets the "Robecology" seal of approval!
Sounds like you are one of the introverted extroverts, able to be an extrovert when needed but just as happy to have alone time now that you can get it.
@OwlInASack It turns out that I am also an introverted extrovert myself, the things we learn about ourselves.

Posted by KateOahuI saw some pretty flowers on a walk today. I’d never seen a white Hibiscus before. And I do not know what the pink flowers are.
