Natural weeding tip! Notice when a species blooms, and then focus on removing that one type for a week or two when it's easier to spot. I had a terrible attack of thistle and was able to end it in two seasons.

What a great idea! Catch it before it gets seed!

I have a constant battle with Ground Elder here in England, apparently brought over by the Romans as a salad crop. I get on top of it, then it creeps in from the neighbour's garden. Pff!

Don't know what that is , but Murphy's Law would suggest , if you harvest it as an edible crop , it will suddenly no longer grow in your garden ....

@Cast1es - This is it - coming through from next door...

@GoldenDoll Kind of looks a bit like mint . A neighbor and I have been fighting an evil vine that grows on both sides of our shared fence .At one point it traveled about 20' under concrete decking and showed up growing through a tiny crack where the deck met the wall of my house . I finally got out the RoundUp , as much as I HATE to use it .

I take this approach with several types of 'weeds'. It's the only logical way.

A stitch in time saves nine. Asian thistle, garlic mustard gets the herbicide treatment early. Early as in NOW.

Garlic mustard has devastated my county recently. So sad to watch my favorite trails taken over.

Eat it!!

@DotLewis A fascinating link. Thanks for that. Not sure if we have it in Australia.

@FrayedBear Can't say if we have it around here. It is not native in US but is here of course. If I find some, will have to try eating it.
For supper tonight I had a dish of stir fried green beans with a little broccoli, Kale flower heads (not bloomed yet) and young Lambs-quarters, with pork. The kale buds came off my plants which are wanting to bloom but it is too early. The Lambs-quarters were plucked in the yard as I don't want too many of them growing in the yard. Lambs-quarters are abundant here, a weed that will take over if given a chance and can grow 7-8 feet tall or more then throw of thousands of seeds. It is called "wild spinach" and is quite healthy. It is surprising how many "weeds" can be eaten.

Good suggestion. Getting to the blooms before they seed will help. Of course if your neighbor has a HUGE crop of said weed and doesn't even mow it, the battle will rage on. 😟

I’ve secretly weeded my neighbors yard when they were out of town. They were harboring the kind of monsters that require leather gloves.

@Untamedshrew That is serious commitment! I spent a couple hours today, weeding out the hen-bit that was trying to take over my flower bed. I forgot it was "naked gardening day" so wore regular clothes, probably good since I live along a highway. Anyway, the hen-bit is blooming but it probably blooms in stages so could already have made seeds. There is plenty of it all over the neighborhood, would have to dedicate much of my waking moments for the rest of the summer to eradicate it. I'm hoping to at least get much of it out of my own yard before it seeds completely.

I've found the battle rages on no matter. The Yin and Yang of nature.

@DotLewis eat the henbit!

@CraeftSmith Well thank you! I had not even thought to look into the edibility of henbit. There is plenty around presently and I will gather some tomorrow to add to a salad.

@CraeftSmith Well, had that salad tonight, lettuce, spinach, raisins, sunflower kernels and hen-bit. It was quite tasty, no distinctive (as in unpleasant) taste from the hen-bit but I will have to perfect my washing methods for it. Think I hit a fine sand grain in it. Of course that sometimes happens when I'm eating bagged salad. 😟

@DotLewis yay! I'm glad you enjoyed it... Or at least didn't hate it haha. You can also eat purple dead nettle, which looks a lot like it. Try www.eattheweeds.com for more
