Help. I have fire ants in my garden. Any non poisoness methods of ousting them so I can plant my okra. They LOVE okra. Last year they moved in, took over the plants and pods and defended them painfully.
I just did a little research. Diatomaceous Earth sounds interesting. Two resources:
Yes, I solved ant issues with diatomaceous earth.
In my limited experience, diatoms work great against slugs and snails. I've never heard it being used for ants before! I like @Krypto-Knight remarks as well.
Try planting peppers around the garden, also mint. Ants don't.like either of those. I use cinnamon to keep the fire ants away from my bed.
Have you tried Borax all round their nest? It's worth the three bucks that a box of Borax costs in the grocery store.
There is an Ortho product named Orthene. It is a white power. Use it very selectively. Find the trails on the ground that the worker ants use to go back and forth to the plants. Sprinkle some of the powder on the trails. The ants will get it on their legs, antennae, and bodies and take it back to the next -- and it will wipe out the entire nest.
can you grow okra in a pot away from these party animals?
@KissedbySun just a thought
I have poured boiling water on ground wasps before (at night!) to some good effect. Maybe it will work on fire ants?
No idea.... There must be some answers on the Internet somewhere.
Wow, I remember fire ants from when I lived in Louisiana. Another reason I'm glad I don't live there. My ex used Diazinon (I think, it's been 33 years) on the fire ant hills. But yah, it is pretty toxic.

Posted by KateOahuI saw some pretty flowers on a walk today. I’d never seen a white Hibiscus before. And I do not know what the pink flowers are.
