I do not like to mince words.
You are selective, and so is the person leaving.
Therefore, leaving means you cannot give what the leaving person wants and vice versa. He or she will find what he or she wants. The person left should do the same. Being together is simply transactional. Nothing more.
You change some but not change who you are to please or want another person.

Be vulnerable. I have practiced being vulnerable in my relationships for the last 4 years and I've never been happier. I share my inner struggles, but I don't get stuck on the negative. I get back to a focus of what's positive. It's a balance of being positive and also being vulnerable. I see it works well for me.
