An interesting list.
I hadn’t read Lolita so I read it and watched the 1996 movie in the past week.
Apparently there is disagreement over whether this is child pornography or great literature.
It is erotic and intimate but I found the language verbose and complicated. There is no way this will last the recent awareness of the damage done to children by Pedophilia. This story is a fetishist’s dream.
It is said to be great literature because it describes a powerful love. It’s more an obsession than a love. Surely true love deserves partnership and knowledge.

I read the book. Did not see the movie. I did not think the book pornographic. There was nothing graphic in the book. The profile of the guy who seduces Lolita, is disgusting and shameful. Good literature? Good story? As a way to let the masses know people like this exist and warn the young, it is worthwhile.

I would not considered that neither child pornografy nor great literature, it is exactly what it is a mans point of view on seduction and atraktivity of a young woman. And in certain way it shows power of sexuality. Biologically there is no reason not to have a sexual relationship with young woman only social punishment or cultural or moralty which is given by society in which you grow up. To be honest I love that movie its classic. Prove me wrong.

It's hard for me to speak on what constitutes "great literature." My culture may see things like this in one way, and French culture may see them in another. We all make up our minds independently. 🙂

I have never read the book so I can't attest to it being great literature. Nor have I seen a version of the film so I can't say whether the story is helped or hurt by being cinematic.. but it is my understanding that the fictional character, Lolita, is not prepubescent which makes it hebephilia not pedophilia.. either way underage by western legal norms.. with obvious exceptions in the American south where some states still allow "child brides" under certain circumstances.

But isn't all love an obsession at some point and on some level? I don't think anyone enters love being lackadaisical about it. We all get a bit unhinged at the beginning. Partnership and knowledge start to occur when feet return to the ground.

I think it's interesting to note that almost 20 people have viewed the post.. and some rather opinionated people as well.. and only 1 comment ( besides mine.. now) Does it show just how taboo the Lolita subject is.. even among "free thinkers" such as ourselves?

Some damn heavy reading on that list , though. lol

I agree, I found it verbose and pompous.
