I've heard a lot of criticisms about "The Boys In The Band", but if you think about the context of the time period in which it was written, before Stonewall, it was actually very ground breaking just for portraying gay characters at all.
Wow!
Re. criticism, it is really something to ponder how dramatically perceptions of what is pc change over relatively short amounts of time. I have heard some really harshly disapproving opinions of young people about Will & Grace, Ellen, about straight actors playing gay characters, a la Brokeback Mountain, or cis actors playing trans, as in Boys Don't Cry or Transparent. No allowance made, nor appreciation given, for breakthrough contributions made to promote awareness, acceptance, respect.
Go figure.
(Now I will catch it for being age-ist!). So be it. Certainly people of all ages are opinionated, sometimes myself included. But with age come some expanded historical perspective and appreciation for how difficult it can be to achieve progress.
