9 Sept. 2019 - Diet Diary - I've been MIA for a few days. Bit of a rough few days. I was sick a couple of nights, an "illness" I brought on myself. Friday, I totally lost it. Closest I've come to a real binge in 2 years. Didn't track anything and ate pretty much anything that came to mind, mostly things I've seriously limited from day to day for 2 years. Although not recorded, I remember cookies, ice cream, bread pudding, chocolate...... the list goes on and although not entirely sugar-laden, there was plenty.

So, the outcome if that fiasco was what I refer to as a 'sour' stomach, which was something I suffered from regularly for as long as I can remember. It involves a seriously nasty, 'rotten egg' tasting burps and stomach/gut discomfort. I thought I was rid of this after my gall bladder was removed, 6 years ago. So, 6 years without these symptoms shot down. Tums at bedtime didn't fix it although after taking them again in the morning, it settled down.

Unfortunately, the lesson didn't take so despite starting out pretty well, midafternoon, all went south. Not as much sugar but still too much and too much food. Another miserable nighr, this time with significant stomach cramping. Same deal with the Tums as the night before but this time the lesson did stick. I CAN NOT eat like this any more. My system will no longer tolerate it.

Sunday, kept my eating controlled, intake was under 1100 and guess what.... NO SYMPTOMS! Today was also controlled, ended at 1039 and feeling fine. Not sure what possessed me on Friday, maybe the ghost of old, bad habits. They do lurk around us, you know. I feel more prepared to repel this one in the future.

We're all victims of a deep-seeded/seated habit. Our diet preferences were established before we could walk and talk...by our well-intended but oft misguided parents.

Don't kick yourself.

Don't hate them.

Just start over. Today is the very first day of the rest of your life.

Thanks for the encouraging words. I know I lapse back to early habits easily, which is why I know I will never be able to quit monitoring very regularly. I could never hate my granny but I know some/many of my bad eating habits started with her. She was so worried about my health when she got custody of me. I don't know if I really had rickets but she always said I did. Of course, her goal was to FEED ME and get me plumped up and she succeeded.

Way too many sugary snacks but 60+ years ago, nobody really thought about sugar being bad for you or your kids. Some things were rare treats, like pop because of cost but the cookie jar always had cookies in it and every meal (other than breakfast) had dessert PLUS a "sauce" bowl of fruit, generally home canned, sometimes store bought but of course always with rich syrup. Sunday night supper was often bowls of ice cream with cookies on the side.

And, of course I was encouraged to eat hearty. It did set me up for a lifetime pattern of being overweight or obese. Have to love my gran, she took me in, loved me unconditionally and did everything she thought was right for me but like you say, the habits we learn early are hard to break and easy to fall back into at the slightest chance. I will stick it out, BUT I have learned that too heavy a sugar load (I think) can trigger the "sulfur burps" and other gastric distress so will really work on avoiding this in the future.

@DotLewis Points taken. We indeed were raised with naiveté about sugar and diet health in general. The flourishing economy of the mid 20th century said it was OK to "spoil" your child...but to even say "spoil" was to know that too much of a good thing can, indeed spoil it....so we ended up "spoiled" with habits that were formed in our infancy.

I'm struggling to get rid of belly fat...and the doc says if I want to get rid of some of the BP meds that I must take...I must lose another 10 pounds. So I too am fighting my inner child and my parent's spoiling to "battle obesity"....glad I was able to inspire you...you inspire me.
