Watching through a window are the artist, Max Ernst, and his Surrealist friends André Breton and Paul Éluard. Symptomatic of modern doubt, it nevertheless reflects very ancient apocryphal Christian traditions about the childhood of Christ.

The entire premise of that painting is absurd, at least in keeping with the concept that Jesus was sinless. Suspending disbelief and going with that ridiculous story of Immaculate Conception, Mary never would have needed to spank Jesus because he never did anything wrong. Jesus's halo is on the ground! Absurd!
