This isn't a meme, but I thought it would be of some interest.
From Diarmaid MacCulloch's Christianity: the First Three Thousand Years
Subverting many devotional themes of Christian art, the Virgin Mary spanks the Christ Child, 1926. Watching through a window are the artist, Max Ernst, and his Surrealist friends AndrΓ© Breton and Paul Γluard. Symptomatic of modern doubt, it nevertheless reflects very ancient apocryphal Christian traditions about the childhood of Christ.
I just like the fact his ass is red from the beating.
The entire premise of that painting is absurd, at least in keeping with the concept that Jesus was sinless. Suspending disbelief and going with that ridiculous story of Immaculate Conception, Mary never would have needed to spank Jesus because he never did anything wrong. Jesus's halo is on the ground! Absurd!
As they said in "The Life of Brian" He's a very naughty boy
White virgin & child. Those supporting the introduction of local State law to allow child beating included the local lay preacher grandmother of the Uniting Church faith.
