Pistol duels were a standard distance of 20 paces for each contestant or approximately 100 feet distance. Considering they were fought with smoothbore single shot pistols the likely outcome was both men would walk away without a scratch but if one or both were hit it was unlikely the wound(s) would be serious.
With a modern pistol 100 feet would still be difficult for most people as long as the contestants were only allowed a single bullet.
