Who can forget the equally violent game of pop the whip?

Hmm. I've never heard that term. Looked it up. I remember playing it. Not sure we ever called it anything.

@scurry Everyone held hands. At the end of the line, one kid starts running until the whole line is running to keep up with him. Then the leader takes a U-turn. Object is to hold hands tightly at the end of the line or a kid at the other end of the line "pops" off the end of the "whip." If it's a long line, several kids would go flying.

If the leader ran toward the school building and then did a U-turn, the kid at the end of the "whip" would "pop" into a brick wall. This could be followed by the playground supervisor getting involved in law suits for neglect.

Understandably pop the whip is rarely played in school yards.

We called it crack the whip. Yeah, violence was encouraged and used for entertainment back then.

@Tinocca Memories and concussions.

Not as hot as going down the metal slide in shorts.

got a hell of a scar on my eyebrow from one, When I was in third grade, only the first a second graders were allowed on the one at school, but the one in the park was 50 mph minimum.

Sorry you got hurt. But imagining them going around that fast still makes me chuckle.

@Tinocca I think everyone else was a lot more freaked out than I was. The face bleeds like crazy. As a kid, i got nosebleeds like mad, so my own blood didn't phase me. If not for all the scars, I couldn't keep the stories straight about which side of my body got hurt,

And yet we made it through .

Sooo much wild energy contained in such a small space. I was always tall with long arms and could make that sucker FLY for some poor kid... I quickly learned to lay flat on my back and plant feet on bars to stay on when big kids got me going on it... clouds going by in vision made me think I was in a clothes dryer, haha!
