I take that back, he was killed by then revived by that satellite called Nomad the Enterprise encountered. I believe the episode was titled The Changeling.

Not to split hairs, but Uhura actually wore a dress style uniform.

@Lizard_of_Ahaz right, but Gene Roddenberry had a vision about a future where skin color and nationality did not matter. People of all ethnicities and nationalities live and work together.
I have most of the Startrek episodes from all the series and the movies as well... It was a joke dating back to the 1960s' (at least with my friends and I)that if someone was wearing a red shirt you knew who was going to die in that episode but a week or two later they would be back with a different name and another red shirt...
