In Nazi Germany, the people placed in concentration camps were those who could not or chose not to get out of their own countries. They were placed there to be killed. In America, it is people who could not or chose not to stay in their own countries. There is no intention of killing them. I think the awfulness of the camps is an attempt at deterring more immigrants from choosing to enter the country illegally. From what I've read, Obama and Eisenhower dealt with illegal immigrants in a much more efficient manner that attracted little media attention. Trump's mistake seems to be not dealing with the problem in a forthright manner and trying to make two wrongs make a right.

Calling bullshit on that.... If there was no intent to kill they wouldn't be giving them bad food and water with no medical care and letting them die....

As for the rest they have been putting citizens in those camps for the same reason the Nazis did.... Their skin isn't White enough...

You must admit Nazis did not mass-murder people with dark skin.

Maltreatment is a long way off mass extermination.

@brentan
A) They didn't start with mass murder.
B) They did start separating families from the beginning just like Trump is doing.
C) The camps used starvation and no medical care to thin people out first Trump is also doing this.
D) Skin color is only one factor in both cases, religion, disability, and even political leanings were others and in this case Trump and the GOP are TRYING their best to subvert the constitution so they can do the same...
E) The only real difference between Hitler and Trump is that Hitler actually served in the military while Trump is a coward and draft dodger...
F) The threat of being sent to a camp was used to terrorize the people just as it is being used today.

@Lizard_of_Ahaz There certainly is a difference when a concentration camp becomes an extermination camp but there is no evidence that one must naturally convert in time to the other. The Japanese, for instance, were incarcerated during WW2 but never murdered. At the moment, we're seeing the criminal results of maltreatment. You may believe that this is part of a Nazi-like policy to start exterminating people but I think you're letting your hatred of Trump convert the reality of the situation into the extreme image of the Nazi era.

@brentan Funny you should mention those camps during WW2 as it seems you know so little about them.... The Japanese were mistreated and lost their properties but while in those camps ha\d far better living conditions than the ones in these camps Trump has set up...

@Lizard_of_Ahaz Now you're being childidh. I spoke about the Japanese incarceration to make one point. Suggesting I'm not aware of other details is disingenuous.

@brentan Really is it?... You are using the actions of the past which have been rebuked by the people of this country for decades even to the point of President Ford who was a Republican having issued a formal apology. An action which has been called by terms such as "horrific" and un-American" yet was still far more humane than these present day actions to normalize them...

@Lizard_of_Ahaz The fact that an official apology was made is another indication that the American attitude to concentration camps is a world apart from the Nazi version, even though, as you point out, the Japanese were maltreated. So now there is maltreatment in the American camps again but nothing like the Nazi camps. And I expect an apology will be issued in the future for this dreadful behaviour too.

@brentan Yet Trump is trying to make them the new Amerklan "normal..." And this is ALWAYS how it starts... Purges and persecutions...

@Lizard_of_Ahaz It's more likely this episode will be another case of maltreatment followed by an official apology. There were no purges or persecutions in American camps in the past and there is no reason to believe there is one coming down the pike.

@brentan You really need to open your eyes to reality... You are taking a religious approach to historical context and you are wrong....

@Lizard_of_Ahaz There's no answer to that!

it is indeed a sad commentary on what the US supposedly stands for

Not the US as a whole just the Republican party....

@Lizard_of_Ahaz agreed

@bookofmoron Not just Nazi Germany, just the Germans in Nazi Germany.

The majority of people in the US don't support Trump.
