Energy prices are to take a slight drop in most of Oz next week, I am happy, I have just contracted to sell my surplus solar for a 25% increase for the next 2 years. This will cover more of my other expenses. Nice to have a win.

Low energy costs often brings about a downturn in the economy. We have been down that road before.

Low energy prices are something we do not have here, we pay so much for basics, electricity, gas, petrol, my diesel is currently $1-54 litre. We are about to become the largest gas producer and exporter in the world, but will we pay the most for it. Stupid country.

@Rugglesby Unfortunately, that is as it should be! When the prices go down people use more and there is a bigger impact on the environment. We need to gut down our petroleum usage not increase it and I laud those countries that understand this. California, has a high gas price and it is mostly because they initiated a carbon tax. Canadians pay double what we pay because of taxes which are used to benefit the citizens and the environment.

@JackPedigo Agree completely as far as non renewables go, I have been advocating increased taxes on these things for over 30 years. What I find really strange is how these mining companies are allowed to extract the fuels so cheaply here, then send them overseas fro greater profit, while locals have shortages. And our government is resisting renewable, they pay token attention only.

This got me to wondering so I searched as to why the price drop. Apparently it is because of more renewables coming online and the closing of some of the dirtiest plants.

So far so good, but this article from a few months ago references the concern about dispatachable power. Do you have you a view as to whether enough storage has been deployed (Tesla project?) and other dispatchable power (nat gas plants?) such that the move toward renewables won't incur too much of a black eye? My impression has been that the opponents of low carbon energy, and of recognizing the dangers of climate change, are (generalizing) sufficiently petty in Australia that they will grab any possible toe-hold to criticize renewables, so that's part of why I ask.

no we don't have enough storage yet, but we could have. ie more telsa giant batteries are being installed and a lot of pumped hydro is being planned. Nationally we can produce heaps of power during the day, if they do what I did and moved all off peak power use from the middle of the night to the middle of the day, that would make a big difference. We have a thing called a controlled load where power companies can turn on some circuits remotely at times when there is a lot of surplus power generated. In the past this was at night after everything shut down. Swimming pools and heaters are mostly on controlled loads.

@Rugglesby

Thanks for the info.

That's great! I hope your success continues!

Posted by JackPedigoI saw this today and even though it is a bit old it applies especially these days. It referenced the "boiling Frog Syndrome" which I have posted several times.
