What is the definition of 'Sustainability'? I've been asked that question many times and I don't know how to answer it. People in my area seem to think I'm a 'green guru'. But I'm not. I'm as trapped into the fossil fueled infrastructure as anyone else and I wonder if anything we do is actually sustainable or green. Help!!

Environmental sustainability is the ability to maintain rates of renewable resource harvest, pollution creation, and non-renewable resource depletion that can be continued indefinitely.
Economic sustainability is the ability to support a defined level of economic production indefinitely.
The two are inseparable in the long term as economic activity cannot exist without the environment.
What needs to be included in economics is a different concept of efficiency, one that goes beyond monetary indicators to take into account aspects such as sustainability of processes and resources and the satisfaction of human needs. The more a system allows for the satisfaction of these needs, the more efficient it will be; and the more sustainable a process is in terms of human and natural resources, the more efficient it will be, even in monetary terms.

the ability to be maintained at a certain rate or level.
"the sustainability of economic growth"
avoidance of the depletion of natural resources in order to maintain an ecological balance.
"the pursuit of global environmental sustainability"

thats googles way of describing it, basically big oil has gotten such a grip on this society and how its run that it will take a clean slate to start all over again, thats only in my honest opinion.

When the tribe tracks and kills a buffalo, thanks the Buffalo Spirit for its gift, and eats the buffalo, that's sustainable. When people slaughter a million buffalo to sell their hides and leaves the meat to rot, that's not sustainable. If you don't muzzle your ox or ass at harvest time, you pre-fertilize the field for the next crop. That's sustainable.

Posted by JackPedigoI saw this today and even though it is a bit old it applies especially these days. It referenced the "boiling Frog Syndrome" which I have posted several times.

Posted by farmboy2017This is a one gallon olla used to irrigate garden plants. It works using capillary action. The vessel is porous and plant roots will wrap around it and drink from it!
