My view is that we should praise leavers for starting the process (OR getting it out of our hair )and then treat the 2016 referendum as PART of the full and proper process IMO as decribed below i.e. use the chance to be educated whilst we are in the crisis or we will have countless other chaos referenda whilst we are putting Mr Cameron on trial for leading us on his path.
No democratic referendum should be without at least these important phases .
1 A vote to fire a ‘starting gun’
2 An intensive fact finding phase in which any opposing sides should give full free and deep information with integrity, nothing hidden and no cunning distractions.
3 Lots of negotiation
4. A vote to decide the acceptability of what has been decided.
5. Revisions of offers and acceptances .
6. Final conclusion.
Re Brexit, so far we have had only No 1 (in 2016) . Well done if you asked for it and voted Not 2,3,4.
Perhaps we will get no 5 soon and 6 will follow when ready.
As a comparative test there are literally millions of people across the world who will have used all of these these process when they have been on strike. Not all strikes fulfil this ideal above however but when they do follow the above millions of people have been satisfied by these processes . Why should Brexit be any different?

It’s bad news whatever way we go....unless we use the Tardis and go back to before 2016 and get Jodie Whittaker to change Cameron’s mind about declaring a referendum!

Making sure we re-educate the public about referenda and the true nature of the EU -see my first comment
@Mcflewster Referenda are bad ways to govern ...especially in a Parliamentary Democracy. We elect our M.Ps.to debate and legislate for us. I don’t believe any of the current options are going to be good for our future....although time alone will tell. I think that the simplistic wording we used in the 2016 referendum was stupid..yes/no and not putting a percentage margin of at least 20% as a minimum to be able to claim a victory. We are in a mess whatever we decide now, and the long term damage to our country we cannot know, but I believe will be considerable. I just may relocate over the border into Ireland, until the time Scotland gains independence....which will be hastened by this debacle.
@Marionville Yes wording and conditions second vote needs better thought as do all our political processes? Can we trust our politicians to make decisions? It will take a written constitution and lots of work to get that trust back.
My desire is to go back to ordinary EU membership think through all necessary revisions of politics whilst learning from and listening to the other 27 countries - for ten years at least and then find out again if we really want it.
@Mcflewster. I concur. We have been mislead by right wing newspapers for years, we should have stayed in and tried to fix the EU along with many other member states who have misgivings about the direction it was taking. The idea that we had no say in decision making is fantasy, no unelected civil servants in Brussels were making the rules for us. Just as in Whitehall, civil servants only carry out the policies of their political masters in Westminster, the legislation was debated and voted on by our MEPs along with those of the other member states in Parliament in Strasbourg. The real policy and decision making was done by the Council of Ministers, the heads of state of all 28 countries, including our own PM, and every country had the power to veto. Yes, another Referendum is called for, although I really am not in favour of them in general terms....this time I think it may be the only way to stop this disaster.
