It really shows my ignorance that I had no idea that this was soul. To me it is reminiscent of West Indies music.

Boogaloo was Big in two places NYC and Puerto Rico... Honestly started in NYC. There were many musicians in the Latin Music World that did not spoke Spanish... they were NYC born and raised. That was before the term "Salsa" was introduced and there were a lot of rhythms before Salsa used... like shing-a-ling, boogaloo, mostancha, jala-jala, charanga, pachanga and more... all created by the Puerto Rico Connection to NYC... add Cubans and their guajira, son montuno, mambo, cha-cha-cha and son. Then came merengue from Dominican Republic. You are not ignorant. West Indies Music. When there was 2 millions of Ricans in Puerto Rico... there was 1 million in NYC just to give you an example. The influence of Jazz, Soul Music, rock will happen. Just like you can see Latin Rhythms in American Pop Music.... listen to Linda Ronstadt (Mexican-German heritage) "You are no good". The beat underneath is latin and I remember writting a Spanish version "No eres Buena" lost with a hard drive crash and never went back to it since was not one of my compositions. You are not Ignorant Sir you are Knowledgeable.
