Today I’m staying very close to home and posting a song which was written by Phil Coulter about his childhood in Derry (Londonderry), Northern Ireland, which is just an hour’s drive to the north of here. It’s sung by The Dubliners ..soloist Luke Kelly who was asked by Coulter to sing it, and he does so with great feeling. The Town I Loved So Well.

Bernadette Devin...now McAliskey since her marriage, lives about 5 miles from here in a place called Coalisland, she’s not a Derry girl, but a Tyrone girl, born in Cookstown in 1947. She was also the youngest person elected as an MP at one time, and her constituency is the one I’m in, Mid Ulster, but it was before I came to live here in Northern Ireland so she was never actually my MP.
@Marionville If you ever meet her please tell her that I loved her book and have shared it with fellow politicians.
A vaguely remembered song & familiar voice. I heard much preferable voices sing it.

It was chosen to be sung by Luke Kelly by its composer...I expect he had his reasons for wishing that, and thought the way his voice sounded was right for the song. Everyone who lives in Northern Ireland knows this song and it’s been sung by scores of others.
@Marionville Luke doesn't have the sweetest of voices.

@FrayedBear The Dubliners always sounded like the Guinness drinking drunks that they were. But they sung masses of Irish bebellion songs so me mum was content with me playing them.
@rogerbenham few were the really heavy ones.
