A 1700's German song, Die Gedanken Sind Frei - Thoughts Are Free - sung by Pete Seeger.
It sounds like it should be a drinking song...I can just imagine the beer steins raised in rhythm with the music.
It does. It is a common song with a freethinker origination I belong to here in the States, FFRF.
This is one of many, many songs put out by FFRF and played and sung by Dan Barker the co-president.
I don't know how much you know about this group, probably a lot, but here is a sample of some of the music played by the Dan Barker (a one time pentacostal minister).
@JackPedigo I know nothing of the organisation...but I presume you were addressing Ray and not me.
@Marionville No, you. Sorry, it wasn't clear. This is the main godfree group in the US. It has over 33,000 members and started with the mother of the co-president who helped fund abortions in a time they were illegal. This organization mentioned FFRF and the Humanist as areas of importance when I first joined. It is one unbelievable group with major personalities in it's list of speakers. In 2018 the Keynote speaker for the San Francisco convention was Salmon Rushdie. He was actually funny. My first convention was in Seattle when Ron Reagan Jr was the keynote speaker and presented his now famous ad. Every convention I attend ends up bowing me over. [ffrf.org]
@JackPedigo. Interesting...I’ve never felt inclined to join any such organisations.
@JackPedigo : I've been a member of FFRF since 2008. I have been to 3 conventions in Madison and one in Pittsburg. Would not be surprised if we've met. You do look a bit familiar
@Marionville : That's understandable, Marje These organizations are not for everyone like us, but sometimes people are so bombarded by religious communities, and in my case several relatives, it helps to keep your sanity by meeting other like-minded people. It is a small group when you consider about 24 per cent of Americans - and that's in the millions, are reported non-religious. 33,000 members is just a fraction.
@Ray13 I've been to two in Madison, one in Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, and LA. They were all memorable and fun.
@Ray13, @Marionville But here you are a member of Agnostic.com and a very active member I might add. I think, considering your interest in this topic you might enjoy being in FFRF. Too bad it's not available there but they do often go to different godfree gatherings all over the world.
