On St. Valentine’s Day I felt I just had to post probably the most beautiful love song ever written …in my opinion of course! Robert Burns’ Red, Red Rose …or My Love Is Like A Red, Red Rose, as it’s now more familiarly known. There are many versions available to listen to but this one sung by Scottish traditional singer Andy M. Stewart is the most authentic and best…again in my opinion. 🌺

I happened upon this one by Eva Cassidy while searching for the one by Andy M. Stewart so I could share it to my FB page, and like it also, so I hope you don't mind me sharing it. I don't remember Eva Cassidy, but really like her voice.

Yes…I do really like this version by Eva …I actually do think I have posted her one before in the past. She is a favourite singer of mine and was very sad that she died at such a young age. Thank you for reminding me of her beautiful rendition l

@Marionville Another one here and gone before I ever heard her sweet voice. There's so much great music out there from the past, and into the future, that I will probably never even know about, but it's so nice to discover a new to me one.

I got to wondering how many women fell for those words only later to live a sorrowful life of violence and druggery. I hear stories.

Which women …Burns’s women?

@Marionville No, not at all. Probably most women.I was a bit shocked by your response. In life I have become ever more aware at just how many women marry wrong men and how men still consider themselves superior to women. A close friend, German and musician, married a friend farmer>. They had 2 children. He does nothing all winter. She does all housework, meals , looks after children. In summer he is out farming all day. They do not speak to one another. All the money is in the farm. She has none. She cannot escape. At least he is neither violent nor a drunkard.

Oh, hard is the fortune of all woman kind
She's always controlled, she's always confined
Controlled by her parents until she's a wife
A slave to her husband the rest of her life

[Verse]
Oh, I'm just a poor girl my fortune is sad
I've always been courted by the Wagoner's lad
He's courted me daily, by night and by day
And now he is loading and going away

[Verse]
Oh, my parents don't like him because he is poor
They say he's not worthy of entering my door
He works for a living, his money's his own
And if they don't like it they can leave him alone

[Verse]
Oh, your horses are hungry, go feed them some hay
Then sit down here by me as long as you may
My horses ain't hungry, they won't eat your hay
So fare thee well darlin’ I'll be on my way

@rogerbenham Oh I misunderstood what you meant. I’m afraid there are still a few women around who put up with this kind of behaviour, but I’d say say fewer than there used to be. Most women can earn their own living outside the home now and will leave if dissatisfied because they are no longer dependent on the man to the same extent…although I’m sure it still happens as you describe which is sad. Many women, and men too of course, are sadly disillusioned with their partners after the initial wooing of them wears off, and they reveal their true colours.

@Marionville It can happen the other way around! My 1st marriage turned full circle one year after we met and I endured 11 years of abuse. Having been the poorest girl at Benenden, she wanted to drive my kind into the mud. She was a year senior to Anne, who moved in a super wealthy despising set.
