Lili Marleen. - Marlene Deitrich. Although German, and already a big star, she renounced her German citizenship in 1939 at the the onset of WW2 as a protest against Nazism and donated the whole of her salary from the 1937 film Knight Without Armour to help fund the escape of refugees. When the USA entered the war in 1941 she put her career on hold to help in the effort to sell war bonds. This song was sung by soldiers on both sides in WW2 and had been written as a poem in 1915 by Hans Liep a poet and playwright from Hamburg. He had been a German soldier on the Western Front In WW1 and wrote it for his sweetheart. It was set to music by Norbert Schultze in 1938. The English lyrics sung by the Allied Forces were added by Tommie Connor in 1939.

My father would be sitting as his desk "writing letters to himself" when I would go into that sitting room and sit at the piano. He never told me to go away and put up with the whole process that I went through figuring out my music, understanding keys, trying to discover for myself secrets of music. Somehow he must have blocked it out. The only thing he ever requested every time was that I play "Where have all the flowers gone" which he associated with Marlene Dietrich. Having been a Captain Mainwaring through the war, he had no love of Germans but Marlene was different. Maybe Marionville can find it.

Here she is singing it at a UNICEF Gala in 1962 in her native German...

And another from The Royal Variety Performance in 1963 in English.

@Marionville Thank you. I'm having to leave them loading as it's sure taking time. With 11 days to go I'm informed that I have just under 50% of my data left ... but out of the 19 days of November I've only been up in this isolation for 9 days so I'm already exceeding my data allowance. Looks as if I'll have to fork out an extra $20 monthly to be able to watch these goodies!

@Marionville Such a wonderful smoky voice. I think that's what my father loved. I suppose that like Vera Lynn she was an inspiration to the British troops.

brilliant! & perfectly apt! our choir master asked me a few days ago whether i'll sing at our xmas gathering. i replied: "what do you suggest?" to which he said: "Marlene Dietrich." i wasn't quite sure yet which of her songs i'd choose, but now it's crystal clear to me. & if i can't find instrumental backing for "Lili Marlene" in deutsch, i'll sing it a capella. thank you, Marionville.

Hope you find the backing score you need....you’ll be a knockout at it I’m sure.

@Marionville, thank you - you have a lot of confidence in me; i'll do my best to live up to it.
