It has now been a year since the tragic death of Dmitri Hvorostovsky from an inoperable brain tumor. He was only 55 years old, a previously exceptionally vibrant human being with an outstanding voice described by some as 'like woodsmoke' ... The opera world grieved at his passing, he was very beloved and admired.
Here he sings this very touching song, so relevant to his own fading life force, at a concert in Russia when he already knew that the first round of treatments did not succeed in eradicating the tumor, that it had come back. What great restraint it must have taken to sing this before his people! notice the faint, gentle smile at the words 'perhaps that place is for me' ...
The song itself, was written by a Japanese poet but subsequently hugely embraced by the Russian people who had tremendous loss of life during the Second World War as well, and then music added to it by a Russian, I believe. This video has the words in English. It is a very sad song, and more so as sung here by Dmitri when he knew the unbeatable cancer was back.

I'm going to post this in our Opera group as well.

What a poingnant rendition this is. Iā€™m sure his thoughts must have been on his own mortality when he was singing,
