Second day home from my Danube Cruise....but I’m holding onto the memories by reliving some of the visual and musical highlights in my head. Here to help is Andre Rieu and his Orchestra with Johann Strauss II’s The Beautiful Blue Danube....live from the Schonbrun Palace in Vienna. This was the favourite home to Empress Elisabeth known to her subjects affectionately as “Sisi”. She was the beautiful wife of Franz Joseph the Austro-Hungarian Emperor. The splendour of the Viennese palaces lives on today, even though Austria is a democratic republic in the EU now....no more royalty, but a wonderful legacy of elegance in their architecture and culture.

We went with Viking River Cruises and they include at least one guided tour in each location as part of the tour…at no extra cost. Because of that the Strauss evening was the only additional one we actually booked. The whole experience of travelling with Viking, both on and off ship was wonderful, so much so that we booked for another river cruise with them which should have gone last September (2020) on the River Douro in Portugal. It was cancelled and postponed until this year on the same dates, and is going ahead in a couple of weeks time. However, we’ve changed our minds about going on it at the present and have opted to change it for a completely different cruise with Viking next summer. We’ve chosen an ocean cruise called Viking Homelands which starts in Bergen in Norway and ends in Stockholm Sweden…travelling to Copenhagen, Berlin, Gdańsk, St Petersburg, Vilnius and Helsinki enroute. The ship looks fantastic and only carries 900 passengers so it’s not gigantic, and can get in close to berth in the fjords and ports quite easily. I’m really excited about it..but have about 11 months to wait, plenty of time to lose some of the weight I’ve put on during lockdown!
That was really terrific! Headphones on, sound turned up, a rich blend, better than I have heard it done before. Thanks.

Same feeling when I visited Vienna. Every Coffee House, every landmark, every corner is full of Strauss!

@Marionville, when I went to Vienna I also went to Mayerling, remembering that film with Omar Shariff and Catherine Deneuve!
