In The Bleak Midwinter is one of my favourite Xmas Carols....music by Gustav Holst and words by Harold Darke, I’ve sung it many times over the years. Here Norwegian soprano Sissel Kyrkjebo with Mormon Tabernacle Choir sings it beautifully.

Sorry to contradict you. This version is the music by Holst. The Darke in F version is the one that Wilcocks introduced into Kings repertoire.

You will appreciate that as a cathedral chorister I sang both versions. [en.wikipedia.org] [poetryfoundation.org]

Christina Rosetti was no doubt connected with the pre-raphaelites, who have intrigued me all my life. I was first turned onto George MacDonald and then William Morris.

You will appreciate that as a trained choral singer I am still singing this carol and have been since I was around 10 years old, I also sing it as a soloist. The music is by Gustav Holst and the lyrics are by Harold Darke....but based on the poem “A Christmas Carol” by Christina Rossetti. Sissel only sings the first and the last verses on the above which I posted...I usually sing the entire 5 verses. I too am a fan of the pre-Raphaelites, William Holman-Hunt and Dante Gabriel Rossetti in particular.
