Happy New Year...had to come to Austria this morning because I always watch the concert from Vienna on TV on 1st January. I am doing just that as I type this post....so here is a compilation from concerts in previous years along with some ballet and that Johann Strauss Jnr masterpiece...The Blue Danube.

I’m in the process of moving to Vienna as I type this. I can’t wait to be apart of the Music scene there. I signed up for the lottery to try to get tix for this years New Year’s Eve concert using 6 different email addresses and sadly none of was chosen, at least I’ll be in the city for this coming New Year festivities

That should be wonderful…there was no audience last year…I watched it as usual on TV. It’s a beautiful city, you’re very lucky.

I went to Vienna for a few days in the summer of 1975, Strauss is always in the air!

I was in Vienna in September when on the Danube cruise...and went to a Strauss Concert in one of the Palaces....gorgeous!

I was there the winter 73/74 and briefly drove through in May '74. June 9th '74 I left England for "5" years in Canada. Went back 4 times but could not imagine not living in Canada. Slightly miss the culture so readily available in Europe but the solitude and beauty I have in Canada has had no problem beating out that big city called Europe.

@rogerbenham There are wild, beautiful and remote parts of Europe too. Europe is not all one big city as you have called it....and I can understand why you like the remoteness and solitude of your part of Canada, but you’re not comparing like with like, when you compare it with European cities like Vienna. I too live in the middle of the country...not as vast as Canada of course, but remote enough from city life, to be able to enjoy the contrast of being in a great city for a few days once in a while. Like most things in life it’s the balance between the two that I appreciate.

I guess it is perspective. When I was visiting my now dead brother on the Beara Peninsula in Co Cork I felt as if I was on the edge of a vast city called Europe. Where I live if I drive 800 miles I can get to Edmonton (1 Million), Calgary (1.2 Million) or Vancouver ( 2.5 Million including Victoria which is further), Add another 600 miles and you've not yet doubled all of those together. 3000 miles gets me within a days drive of Toronto where I would get the same feeling knowing that I'm on the edge of a potential city of well over 100 Million taking account of all those USA cities not very far away. It is 250 miles from my home to the coast and 250 miles to Prince George which has about 40,000 people. The city of Europe might have a centre around Frankfurt. I know were I anywhere near there I'd feel surrounded by people. Here I am surrounded by trees.
