I am a very fast and voracious reader, I have read just about any classic you can think of, I have very little money for buying books , and I don't have access to a public library at the moment. Can anyone recommend me free books I can read online via, for example, Project Gutenberg, that I might not have come across? Or any authors they particularly like?

Dostoevsky would keep you going for a long time. He's free on YouTube. You probably already know. And Tolstoy. I listened to The Master and Margharita on YT too. That's a curious story! I must be thinking Russian today.

I have read a lot of the Russians and like them very much. 'The Brothers Karamazov' is one of my favourites. I didn't like 'The Master and Margarita' though.

Are you looking for authors of fiction? If so, what other authors do you like? If not, any particular subjects?

Both fiction and non-fiction. I like science for the lay-person, philosophy, archaeology, lit. crit., but there is not a lot of interesting non-fiction available free. In fiction I read a lot of light-weight crime that I can get free from Amazon Kindle. I particularly like the nineteenth century and early twentieth century authors, UK and USA. I'm just hoping someone will come up with something I have missed!

@CeliaVL I'm not sure these authors are available online for free, but but have you tried looking on bookfinder.com? Bookstores around the world post their books there, some as cheap as US $3.00, including shipping. I have been using them for years.

Fiction - here are some I enjoy:

  • Allen Drury - "Advise and Consent" and a series of political intrigue novels
  • John O'hara - "Appointment in Samarra" and others
  • Dick Francis - Mysteries, usually around a race track
  • Frank Spearman - "Held for Orders" and many others
  • Kira Peikoff - "Living Proof" and other thrillers

Non-fiction: too many to list now...

@sfvpool Thanks - a couple of names I haven't come across. I shall look for them!

Try Title trader.com and swapz.com you can trade books for free with other like minded people.
Also if you go on ebay you can buy disks of 100+ public domain and out of copy right books for literally pennies.

It is suggestions for specific authors I am looking for - people I might not have heard of, that other people have enjoyed. I can then go to out of copyright sites to get them. Trading books is a problem for the moment, while I am in Spain. But thanks for the suggestions.

Posted by ReignmondA highly biased selection.

Posted by ReignmondI read this back in 2018. Absolutely loved it. It is an oddly small sized book, so it is good to travel with. [amazon.com]
